Keeping the Faith
A Christmas Wish granted by H&M

Charterboat Faith and San Diego and supporters of the effort by the landing to take a 17-year-old Hodgkins patient on a Special Wish trip Christmas Eve day

Seventeen-year-old Kyle Riggs, who has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, wanted to visit San Diego (where it’s warm) with his mother, Cincy Carrico and his 13-year-old sister, Cayla, to go fishing, see a Chargers game and visit the Zoo and Safari Park. They live in Oberlin, Ohio.

To make his wish come true, Marcia Allen of A Special Wish Foundation, Inc. in Lorain, Ohio, called the offices of H&M Landing, as she has done before, to request fishing trip passes. This time, however she was asking if she could arrange a discount on a private charter for Kyle and his family instead of her past request for passage on a regularly scheduled trip.

KYLE RIGGS, 17, OF OBERLIN, Ohio, who has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, wanted to visit San Diego with his mother, Cindy Carrico and his 13-year-old sister, Cayla, to go fishin. They were granted the wish, courtesy of the sportfisher Faith, H&M Landing and several other benefactors.

When asked, Captain John Guest, owner and operator the charter boat “Faith,” stepped up and offered to run the discounted trip. On second thought, he offered to provide the trip at no cost, which would normally cost $1,000.

Then Capt. Guest and the staff at H&M Landing started reeling in the fish.

Capt. Guest called Everingham Brothers Bait Company and they offered to provide the bait free of charge. Then he called on his past employer at Toyota of Escondido who chipped in the cost of the fuel and lunch.

Capt. Guest, having learned that Kyle was a Chargers fan, contacted the Charger’s office and the team has offered to do something special for Kyle. (He came into town a day late to see the game.)

The Zoo and Safari Park also gave complimentary passes to the family.

The H&M landing office contacted the California Department of Fish & Wildlife to inquire about donated or discounted fishing licenses for the trip. Suzanna Wilson of the Department’s License and Revenue Branch responded that they couldn’t provide discounted or donated licenses, but that members of their staff wanted to make donations to underwrite the cost of the licenses.

So the half-day fishing trip is scheduled to depart from H&M Landing at 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 24, on the sportfishing boat “Faith," a 48', six-passenger yacht, with Capt. Guest at the helm.

A Special Wish Foundation is taking care of airfare, luggage fees, lodging (Marriott), rental cars and gas. Merry Christmas, Kyle! They will be going home on Dec. 29.
