2013 Fred Hall Shows shine again

What’s ‘On-Tap’ for the 2011 Fred Hall Show” It’s bigger and more diverse than ever. and fun for the whole family

The Fred Hall Shows were designed to provide a family with a full day’s worth of outdoor recreation entertainment. In the 1940s there were the log rollers, in the ’50s and 60’s there were high dive acts, Japanese cormorant fishermen and trick archers.

Today’s Fred Hall Show entertainment over five days in Long Beach March 9-13 is just as fun and even more interactive. Fred Hall & Associates want attendees to feel like they participate in the show.

“It starts with over 400 seminars where questions and answers are a big part of the program,”said Bart Hall, show producer. “One of the main seminar areas is presented by Fin-Nor and another is sponsored by Shimano. Shimano will also be having seminars in their newly expanded booth, the largest in show history.”

Berkley is always huge at the shows, says Hall, and will feature continuous seminars in their 10,000 square booth. Plano and Field Time Sports & Guns will be sponsoring the dedicated hunting seminar area, located next to the new Turner’s Outdoorsman booth that will feature a large firearm section. All the seminar details can be found at and in this paper.

Two special pre-show seminars will take place again this year. On Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Shimano presents, The Long Range Fishing Workshop “A Captain’s Perspective on How to Catch More Fish” featuring legendary long-range captains, Frank LoPreste (Royal Polaris), Tim Ekstrom (Royal Star) and Brian Kiyohara (American Angler). On Friday at 1 p.m., TV personality and 6-time Emmy award winner Chris Fischer, host of National Geographic’s No. 1 show Expedition Great white and Shark Men, will show excerpts from past and future shows and answer questions. Chris is presented by Keep America Fishing.

Hall is especially excited about the expansion of the hunting and shooting sports at the show.

“The shooting sports have a big part in the 2011 Fred Hall Shows. Big 5 will provide two pellet and BB gun ranges and two soft air ranges,” said Hall. “Big 5 will have all of the BB, pellet and soft air products for sale at their booth along with a full line of Savage and Mossberg rifles and shotguns.” He added that there is also a Laser Shot shooting range hosted by the California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA), and Orange County Archery will again have their archery shooting range. Of course Triton Boats will sponsor the Freshwater Mobile Aquarium and the Saltwater Tank once again. These popular seminar venues will set up in the Sports Arena.

The Kids Fish Free Trout Pond has been a favorite attraction at a Fred Hall Show for over 6 decades and this year it is sponsored by The Auto Club of Southern California, and there will be frawing each day where the kids can win prizes, such as a FLIPSTAH casting game. The New AAA Kids Fish Free Trout Pond is a throwback to the old days of the Fred Hall Show and kids are going to love it because the bite will be “wide open.” Kids can catch and release or store their fish in a refrigerator until it’s time to leave. Thirty years ago that is how the trout pond used to work. It’s located outside on the patio area.

Also on the patio area the Dodge Dock Dogs return to the show for another year. Customers can bring their dogs to the show and have them participate in the Dodge Dock Dog competitions. The dog and one dog handler get into the show free if they are participating in the contest. “Big Air” dog jumping is very entertaining.

The patio area also features an event that was in Long Beach two years ago, The Great American Duck Races. Families love this event. The bleachers are always full and it is usually “standing room only” for these duck races where kids are the ”jockeys.”

Another new event for the Fred Hall Long Beach show is an on-land wakeboard demonstration presented by Wakesports Unlimited and Liquid Force wakeboards. Some of the most famous riders in the world will appear several times a day and do amazing things in this on-land demonstration, much of it very dangerous. This event is scheduled to be on the patio area at press time.

Back in the Exhibit Hall will be a new fly-fishing area.

“Wait until you see it all" said Hall. “It’s spectacular! Continuous casting lessons, fly tying and great deals on all fly-fishing equipment. And right next door to the fly area is the Lowrance learning center where anglers can really learn how to use their Lowrance equipment. Stop by the Lowrance main booth to make reservations to be in this class. Space is limited and it always sells out.”

And right next to the Lowrance Learning Center is the brand new Fred Hall Experience Dive Pavilion. You can’t miss the 20-foot high underwater scene. There will be a large dive store set up from Deep Blue Scuba and Swim Center. There will be a dive pool and folks from “Deep Blue” and Hollywood Divers will show you the basics of diving. You don’t have to bring a bathing suit or even put on a wet suit, there will be dry suits available where all you have to do is take off your shoes, step into the dry suit, with your clothes on. You can experience diving, be dry and have fun. Dive instructors and free-dive instructors will be on hand. Fish hunting through diving, both free and scuba, will be some of the topics covered.

If you want to avoid the long lines at the entrance to the Fred Hall Show then, after you park, take the free shuttle to the NEW Boats-On-the-Water section of the show. This area opens at 11a.m. during the week and 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. You can buy your tickets there, browse the boats on the water, take a tour of the long-range boat the Independence, get your hand-stamped and walk 50 yards across the Hyatt Bridge right into the show.

Outside, there will again be the Avet Casting area. Check out the new casting models of Avet. Conventional reels.

And finally, the favorite adult interactive feature at a Fred Hall Show is the Costa Sporting Chef Cafe featuring TV personality the Sporting Chef Scott Leysath and recording artist Gary Shiebler. Gary sings and plays guitar while Scott cooks fish and game and lets us all sample it.

“Scott is not only a great chef but a very entertaining personality,. ”says show producer Hall. “He feeds you and makes you laugh. I love this event and so will you.”

THE FRED HALL SHOW…The Ultimate Outdoor Experience, is at the Long Beach Convention Center, March 9-13. Kids are admitted free if they are 16 and under. Admission is $15 at the door.
