Irvine Lake Trout opener by WON  this Saturday

SILVERADO — It’s back, with more prizes than ever, at the finest Southern California trout fishing venue. It’s the Western Outdoor News Irvine Lake Southern California Trout Opener and if you are looking for a great family event, this is it.

“It’s pretty amazing all the prizes we have for this event, much more than last year because the sponsors all know that family and kids and fishing is our future, and they know we put on a class event,” said WON’s Director of Advertising, Chuck Buhagiar. “It’s a truckload of stuff.”

Free drawings, several divisions for adults and kids, tagged fish worth$500 Sport Chaletfor anyone catching the corresponding tagged fish, the grand raffle prize of a Gregor CH45L aluminum boat equipped with a 15 hp Mercury outboard, overall big fish awards and trophies presented to the top five big fish caught in each of three categories and a lake plugged with huge fish.

“Baseball season started last week, but this the Major League event of the SoCal freshwater season,” said director Bill Egan.

Irvine Lake has scheduled stockings prior to this event, so your chances of catching a tournament winner are dramatically increased. And in terms of the cost of entering the event, said Egan, we're keeping the entry fees affordable for all. Adult entry will run $45, while entry fees for junior anglers 12 years and younger will run $30. Best of all, this includes your Irvine Lake gate fee for the day — a $22 value! Your entry also includes your shot at hundreds of tagged fish prizes, raffle prizes, and the grand prize drawing at the conclusion of the event.

Spots are filling up fast, so get your entry in as soon as possible and be part of SoCal’s biggest and best trout fishing tournament.

For more information, or to enter the April 9 SCTO, contact Tournament Director Bill Egan at (949) 366-0030, ext. 40, billy@wonews.com; or Tournament Coordinator Ashley Hartman at (949) 366-0030, ext, 38, ashley@wonews.com.

First 600 SCTO anglers to receive sweet goodie bags!

Free goodie bags are arguably one of the most appealing aspects of any WON one-off freshwater event, and this year’s SCTO bags are some of the best we’ve ever had.

The first 600 anglers through the gate will receive goodie bags filled with one Panther Martin spinner, one Thomas Buoyant spoon, one Rooster Tail spinner, and a jar of YUM TroutKrilla — all of which have proven to be deadly on Irvine Lake’s trout.

In other words, don’t be surprised if the biggest trout of the event is caught on one of the above baits.

With the lake at full pool, there’s less shoreline to fish, so boaters may have an advantage this year

Rental boats might still be available. The SCTO marks one of the few occasions Irvine Lake allows pre-reservations for boat rentals, and anglers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity.

And for those opting to launch their own rig, Irvine Lake will also be offering boat slips so SCTO anglers can drop their rig in the water the night before and avoid the crowds and long lines on Saturday morning. And for only 10 bucks for the slip rental, it’s a no-brainer.

For more information, or to reserve your rental boat for the upcoming SCTO, call Irvine Lake at (714) 649-9111.

Sea Eagle and Western Outdoor News will be raffling offone of these great boats. All tournament participants need to do to have their chance at winning this rig is clearly write their name and angler number on the back of any “clearly obvious” Panther Martin lure package of any kind. The actual Sea Eagle inflatable will be displayed on-site at the event, and adjacent to the boat will be a large box where all lure packages are to be placed. Anglers can place as many packages into the box as they would like, as every package is an entry.

Gregor CH45L aluminum boat and 15 hp Mercury motor to be awarded as grand raffle prize!

In 1964, Gregor Boat Company opened for business when it introduced an all-welded aluminum boat, constructed utilizing the Thermotrol Welding System; a patented process created by George Gregory. That 13-foot boat was revolutionary and set a new standard of quality — the standard of excellence. Today, all-welded boats are considered the hallmark of a better boat. But welding alone does not mean you are getting a superior boat. A superior boat is a well-designed boat, an engineered boat, a Thermotrol-welded Gregor boat.

Today, as in the beginning, each new model is thoughtfully designed and precisely engineered for maximum performance, low maintenance, durability, good looks, and safety. The designs and production procedures are continually scrutinized so that you receive the best possible. Their graduate engineering staff, combined with 50 years of designing and building aluminum boats, is your assurance of quality, craftsmanship, design excellence and superior engineering.

Any boat is only as good as the company that stands behind it. Gregor Boat Company has been building the highest quality aluminum boats for over 40 years. They are fully committed to the marine industry and to you, their customer. Ask a Gregor owner. Check with several local boat shops. Talk to people who know boats. They will tell you that the finest aluminum boats built are built by Gregor.

The superiority of welded construction is evidenced by the growing number of welded boats available to the consumer today. But just welding is not enough; use of the Thermotrol Welding Process reduces stresses which continue to perplex other welded boat manufacturers. Only Gregor can give you a consistently smooth, solid, one-piece unitized hull from gunnel to gunnel and stern to stern.

They have a commitment to build the highest quality aluminum boat available. By using a formal quality control program, this commitment is assured. Prior to production, each new model is fully tested for proper performance, endurance and appearance. They use only the highest quality material. High standards are also set for the production process. Their quality control program requires each boat to be inspected at every stage of production. The pride of their craftsmen is evident in every boat they build. This means that you, as a Gregor boat owner, receive the finest quality product available.

The Gregor H-Series, designed for rugged use, is an excellent performer with the small outboards usually associated with car-topping. The modern level shear line with a superior bow and bottom design incorporating the Hydroflow keel provides unequaled tracking and visibility. The H-Series, with its Integrated Structural System, is popular with rental fleets; and you’ll probably see more Gregor H-Series boats on western waters than any other boat in its class. The reputation of these boats speaks for itself — quality, performance, durability, and safety — without the extra pounds. And the CH’s feature a walk-through center seat for that added ease of moving about.

This year’s SCTO grand raffle prize will be a Gregor CH45L outfitted with a 15 hp Mercury outboard. The boat will also include the optional decking, providing more space and fishability for whomever returns home from the event with this sweet new rig. And whether you catch a fish during the SCTO or not, your entry into the fun-filled tournament gives you a shot at winning this boat/motor combo.

THIS YEAR’S GRAND RAFFLE PRIZE will be a Gregor CH45L aluminum boat outfitted with a 15 hp Mercury outboard. No matter how you fare during the April 9 SCTO, your entry into the fun-filled tournament gives you a shot at winning this boat/motor combo. In other words, you don’t even have to catch a fish to be eligible to win.

2011 Irvine Lake Southern California Trout Opener Rules

General Rules

— The Southern California Trout Opener (SCTO) contest is open to the general public. Employees and family members of Western Outdoor News and Irvine Lake are not eligible to win prizes.

— All contestants must check in the morning of the competition and sign a release form prior to heading out to fish in order to be eligible to participate. Each angler will be issued an individual identification number they must keep with them during the contest for identification purposes by the tournament staff.

— No fishing license is required by Irvine Lake to participate in this contest.

— All Irvine Lake-specific rules regarding fishing and boating will apply to the SCTO. Irvine Lake rules are shown on the back of your gate pass and may also be viewed online at www.irvinelake.net

Contest-Specific Rules

A. This is a “trout only” competition. All other species caught may be possessed per Irvine Lake rules, but are not eligible for prizes in the SCTO contest.

B. SCTO contest hours are from 6 a.m. on April 9th, 2011, to 4 p.m.

C. All trout caught must be taken from the waters of Irvine Lake or the Irvine Lake Lagoon on April 9th, 2011. Trout may be taken from shore, boat, kayak, canoe or float tube. All trout caught prior to or after this date are not eligible for prizes.

D. All fish must be legally caught by rod and reel by generally accepted angling principles per the California Department of Fish and Game regulations. No fish may be “free netted” from the water or caught by snagging. Floating or washed-up dead fish will not be accepted regardless of if they are tagged or not. California Fish & Game freshwater regulations may be viewed online at www.dfg.ca.gov.

E. Anglers caught in willful violation of California Fish and Game or Irvine Lake-specific angling rules will be disqualified from the competition and forfeit their eligibility to win prizes.

F. This contest will consist of 1) Tagged fish prizes and 2) Top five big fish prizes in the Adult Male and Female and Junior angling categories. Big fish will be determined by overall weight of the fish, not overall length.

G. Hundreds of tagged fish will be planted in Irvine Lake prior to the contest. All tagged fish will have numbers assigned to specific prizes. Anglers catching these fish may bring them to the official contest scales to collect their prizes. All tagged fish caught must be redeemed for their prize no later than 4 p.m. on April 9th, 2011, or that prize will be donated to the big fish prizes or general raffle. NO EXCEPTIONS!

H. Should you catch one of the hundreds of tagged fish planted in the lake, DO NOT REMOVE THE TAG FROM THE FISH! Anglers catching a tagged fish MUST present the whole fish with tag intact to receive their prize. Tags brought to the scales without a fish will not be eligible for prizes. As such, you should take care of your tagged catch by placing it in a cooler wrapped in a wet towel.

I. Anglers will be awarded plaques and prizes for the top five big fish (trout) caught by each of these angling categories: Adult Male, Adult Female, and Junior (12 years or younger). Each angler in these categories may weigh only one big fish, which will be eligible for the big fish prizes.

J. All anglers who wish to weigh fish for the big fish prizes must do so no later than the time at which the official scales will close, which is 4 p.m. on April 9th, 2011. Due to time constraints, once the top five big fish in a category have been established, the tournament authority may elect not to weigh fish presented which are smaller than the current top five big fish standings.

K. The tournament authority (Tournament Director) has the sole discretion to disqualify any catch for reasons they deem violate tournament rules or the spirit of the competition. All decisions of the Tournament Director are final.
Awards and Raffles

— All SCTO participants by virtue of their entry into the contest will have a single entry placed in a raffle bin. As the tickets are drawn, the name and angler number of the winner will be announced. All names drawn must be present to win; otherwise, prizes will be donated back to the general raffle. No additional raffle tickets are available for sale — everyone has one entry.

— Southern California Trout Opener prize winners will be responsible for all taxes, licenses, transportation and any other costs involved in redemption of their prizes.
Refunds, Cancellations, Weather and Miscellaneous

— The Southern California Trout Opener will be conducted rain or shine. No refunds will be issued due to inclement weather, so dress and plan accordingly.

— No refunds for any reason will be issued after April 7th, 2011. All refund requests must be made to Western Outdoors Publications no later than this date. Prior to April 7th, 2011, refund checks will be issued and sent within two to four weeks of notification.

— Anglers who enter but wish to cancel may also transfer their entry to another contestant. This may be done prior to the contest by phoning Western Outdoors at (949) 366-0030, ext. 40, and speaking with Tournament Director Bill Egan. You may also do this on the morning of the contest at the late check-in/sign up station.

— Irvine Lake will be barbecuing hot meals for those who are interested in something more than a sack lunch.

— Anglers with additional questions may call Bill Egan at (949) 366-0030, ext 40.
