| They're back! Although they are not so giant this time around.
Four- to 8-pound Humboldt squid are in the counts for boats from Dana Point to Long Beach; the fleet of half, 3/4 and twilight trips combined for over 1,000 squid on Wednesday.
"The squid are everywhere," reported Brian Woolley, Captain of the Sum Fun out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing. "They're thick off Huntington, and we've got them right here off Dana Point. You can get them day or night."
When the Sum Fun pulled into 30 feet of water to cut fish last night the squid were shooting around under the lights.
Woolley said they had over 100 squid on the Sum Fun twilight Wednesday night, and Thursday morning the Dana Pride was already "done" on the squid for its 3/4-day trip.
The Freelance out of Davey's Locker posted 180 squid to go with 35 calico bass, 5 sheephead, 15 whitefish, 22 perch and 2 bonito. The fin fish were from Catalina.
Pierpoint Landing's Southern Cal had 193 squid for its half-day with 33 anglers on Wednesday.
