BIG BEAR LAKE — The Western Outdoor News Big Bear Lake TroutfesT is finally upon us — this
weekend to be precise, Oct. 1 and 2 — and for those who’ve already signed up
for the event, expect not only good trouting, but also plentiful prizes and
awards to be doled out. And if you’ve yet to sign up, you can do so this week by
calling Tournament Coordinator Ashley Hartman at (949) 366-0030, ext. 38 by 3
p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, or on site Friday from 12 to 9 p.m. at the Big Bear
Lake Visitor Center. If the event hasn’t sold out by Saturday morning, you can
also sign up from 4 to 6 a.m. at the same location.
One of the most recent
sponsors to jump on board for this year’s ‘Fest is Quality Performance Marine,
located in Corona.
Rob Clarke, owner (and master
tech) of Quality Performance Marine, established his operation right
near the crossroads of several major thoroughfares in Corona, just off the
91 freeway near the I-15.
At this weekend’s TroutfesT,
Quality Performance Marine will be on-hand with a booth where participants can
take a guess at how long a Mercury outboard will run after being disconnected
from the gas tank. The person guessing closest to the actual second will win a
sweet Mercury accessory prize package!
And in terms of current
trouting conditions on Big Bear Lake, action was on the slow side for a bit due
to dropping oxygen levels, but as of this past week or so, the fish seem to be
bouncing back.
The best advice for TroutfesT
participants would be to target the eastern side of the lake, as oxygen levels
are better in that region. And insofar as techniques are concerned, trollers
should stick with flatlining early and late, and use downriggers or leadcore in
the afternoons. Drifting PowerBait or nightcrawlers should also be an effective
approach.
Also, a Klamath boat be given
away, but a Ford
truck is also up for grabs.
The boat will be a 15-foot
Klamath Advantage S outfitted with a Mercury outboard, and one lucky raffle
ticket holder is guaranteed to go home with the rig.
The Ford truck, however, will
not be a raffle prize, but rather a tagged fish award.
At this year’s 2011 Western
Outdoor News Big Bear Lake TroutfesT, Oct. 1 and 2, the Ford Dealers of
Southern California are sponsoring the TroutfesT tagged fish program with a
2011 Ford F-150 Super Crew XLT 4X2 valued at $30,000. 
In addition to the tagged
fish valued at 30 grand, there will be hundreds of additional tagged trout
worth $25,000.
The tagged fish worth the
Ford truck will pay out only if caught during official contest hours on
Saturday, Oct. 1st.
Thanks in part to the efforts
of the Ford Dealers of Southern California, and YUM Bait Company, these fish
will be randomly and equi-distantly distributed throughout the waters of Big
Bear Lake prior to the tournament.
Each contestant will receive
official tagged fish rules in their check-in packet, which can be obtained
during the Friday check-in Sept. 30th at the Big Bear Visitor's Center/Chamber of Commerce.
