the  fishing's hot

A month to go and fishing is unreal on big tuna..

**Why go? Three parties, two days of fishing and exciting weigh-ins, free gifts, prizes and maybe even a reality TV show….

**Get a team together!  Cost is just $200 a person for a four-man team entry of $800 and there’s plenty of time to get a trip and team together  for the biggest tournament in Cabo, slated for Nov. 7-10

THE 2011 CHAMPIONS, from Cabo Magic, at the awards dinners last year.

Get ready and get a team together, because the 14th annual WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot, the richest and biggest tuna tournament in the world and the biggest tourney each year in Cabo is coming up fast, Nov. 7-10. Fishing has been spectacular on 150 to 200-plus pound yellowfin on the banks, especially the Gordo that this week posted a 245 pounder and has been averaging 10 fish over 200 pounds in the past few weeks.

Look, it's not too late to extend your summer.  Not by a long shot. There are boats still available for charter, and you can get a list of charter companies at www.loscabostunajackpot.com.

The website is informational and has the entry form, rules, links to sponsors and details on optional jackpots, payouts and he latest fishing reports from Land's End, updated weekly, plus a roster of teams that have signed up.

There’s almost too many improvements to the event to list here, but this year there are several new sponsors joining an already long list of supporters.

"I truly feel this will be the best tourney in the 14 years we’ve been holding it," says director Pat McDonell, who started the event 14 years ago with others at WON and is in his sixth year as the director after being co-director for the previous years.  "The addition of several sponsors, improvements in venues and the parties. Besides the three nightly parties, two days of  fishing and free sponsors gifts over four days, it’s perfect timing for the big yellowfin.

It’s great fun, but above all it’s a serious money tournament. Last year eight teams split $423,600 with the top yellowfin a 213 pounder by Cabo Magic (what a Magic to Magic story!), but there were three 200 pounders and two more fish of 198.1 and 190.2 pounds to round out the top 5 fish of the event.  There are plenty of ways to win and at all levels, from pangas to 60 footers competing. But it’s not the  size of the boat that determines who wins, it’s  the talent of the fishermen from around the world.

And it’s not just big tuna that take home the money.

Two teams, Checkmate and Reina De Wahoo earned $36,000 in the Dorado/Wahoo $1,000 optional. Some teams come down and only enter that optional.  With those fish, you are never out of contention as long as you have a lure or bait in the water! As always, a team entry is $800. That’s your ticket to fun and competition and prizes and parties. Want to up the ante? There are six tuna optionals and one wahoo/dorado optional.

Of course, Fish Hard and Party Harder is always the motto of the event. There’s three nightly parties, two days of fishing, two catered sit-down dinners under the stars by the beautiful Cabo San Lucas Marina and massive free drawings and free gifts. Live bands, a new start-boat charter for charity the second day on the start boat Oceanus, mariachi and rock bands and the Cabo nightlife that will test your stamina.

And this year, a reality TV show crew is planning on competing in the tourney will join the other media filming and reporting on the tournament. At this writing, WON heard on Friday, they were waiting to get the final Network go-ahead on the show. (Check out the Vimeo link below).

The cost of competing is not that high. A charterboat in Cabo or even a super panga ranged from $250 to $600 a day for the tourney, the entry fee is $800 for up to four people, airfares are at $400 and the Wyndham and National rental cars have rates that are excellent. The Wyndham is the official hotel of te event where nearly every part of the event is within 100 yards of your room, and they just completed their new second floor patio pool. See the photo below. View rooms are $100 a night on average for two people, and that includes buffet breakfast. The hotel under Wyndham partnership has made vast improvements.

"The bottom line on this event is this:" said McDonell.  You an enter, fly down, get a $600 a day charterboat, stay at the Wyndham for $60 each a night for five days of the tournament,  and you still are under $1,000 for each person in a four-man team and that included two dinners at the event, and all your breakfasts. Plenty of teams come down, get into one or two optionals, rent a National car, dine out, party and even after tips and bait they are under $2,000 for the entire trip and tournament. Now, if you want a bigger boat, fly first class, add jackpots, the the costs are higher. But  five days in Cabo, in a tournament, with three parties, welcome gifts  (event hat,  event shirt,  event backpack, Seaguar fluoro, Mustad hooks, Yo-Zuri Hybrid fishing line and more)  and a chance to win some serious money and that's a pretty fantastic return on your entertainment and fishing dollar."

There are great hotel deals at the Wyndham Cabo San Lucas Resort which has completed its new pool  (see photo taken last week)  and National Rental Car, and be sure this year to buy some custom CTJ-wrapped cigars from Cabo Cigar Company for yourself and friends back home.

The New pool at the Wyndham Cabo San Lucas Resort, official Tuna Jackpot hotel and central to 90 percent of the event's activities. The hotel's special rates (see link) for the event include buffet breakfast.
