HUFFMAN BACKS OFF RICHARDS RECALL THREAT
By Paul Lebowitz
WON Staff Writer

Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, is telling concerned constituents from the hunting and fishing communities that he is no longer pursuing a legislative motion to oust embattled California Fish and Game Commissioner Dan Richards.

That doesn't mean Huffman is pulling back from criticizing Richards' recent Idaho mountain lion hunt. A photo of the smiling Richards hoisting his cat first appeared in the pages of WON, setting off a furor among animal rights activists.

Huffman told the San Diego Union-Tribune's Ed Zieralski that Richards' act "Was highly inappropriate for someone in an appointed position... It's not the first time he has been extremely provocative in his statements or actions."

Huffman went on to say that although he has reconsidered a motion, it is likely that another state legislator will. Earlier this week, Paola Avila, spokeswoman for  Ben Hueso, D-San Diego, confirmed that the assemblyman is "interested" in the situation but had not yet decided on a course of action.

It may take weeks to materialize. Avila further told the U-T's Zieralski that nothing is imminent.

Meanwhile, Richards has declined comment, promising that he will speak later on the issue.
