|The weather came down and the boats out of Ventura County were all able to get out today. It was like the rockfish opener, a day late. After canceling on the Thursday, I was able to get out on the Aloha Spirit today; the On-the-Spot will be in next week's WON, but here's a little sample:
The wind and weather kept the boats pushing up the frontside of Santa Cruz Island to hide from the Santa Anas. It wasn't all huge reds like the one above taken by Sterling Teshima, but there were some nice reds in the rockfish mix to go with about a ling around. We had 19 lings for the trip. The hot rig? A simple squid strip or two on a 2/0 or so sized hook with a dropper loop.
