|My saying for this spring is "We need conditions," and for the third weekend in a row the ocean pretty much got blown out. Give us conditions, as in clean 60-degree water to start, and the fish will show and bite, from local bass and barracuda to island yellows and seabass. But first we need conditions.
Seaforth, Dana Point and Marina del Rey were the only landings with counts today. Seaforth had some 1.5-day trips skate in with Baja rockfish before the weather kicked up, while the Voyager had to make a right hand turn into San Diego and shuttle the people back to Seaforth after its 2-day trip. The big swell closed out many a harbor, including Channel Islands Harbor and any others with some west face to them. Channel Islands Harbor had close outs breaking across the breakwall and harbor mouth.
Here's a pic that Sea Jay owner John Fuqua shot at a closed-out Channel Islands Harbor today; yeah, you'd have to be a fool to try and get out on this day. (Somehow I managed to dodge the cheesy April fools blog, as tempting — and unoriginal — as it is.)
