Wayne Breazeale of Kelseyville, Calif. claims title

A wire-to-wire win for Breazeale for second victory in two years


CLEARLAKE -- The 2017 WON Bass California Open came to a close with a record-setting event Friday.  With the first-ever wire-to-wire victory Wayne Breazeale of Kelseyville, CA claimed the title and the trophy for the second consecutive year. Breazeale bested the field with a tournament total of 76.14, a weight that led by more than six-pounds and included the event’s biggest bass at 10.83.

Breazeale is the only California Open champ to take the trophy twice. His win earned a grand prize package that included a Bass Cat Boats Sabre FTD with a Mercury Motor 150 HP ProXS Optimax.

Also earning a wire-to-wire win was AAA victor James Bunker of Martinez, Calif. Bunker was paired with Breazeale on Day One and held the AAA top spot through the final day. His final weight came in at more than five-pounds his nearest competitor at 61.93.

WON Bassers will compete again on October 17, 18 and 19 for the 35th anniversary of the U.S. Open at Lake Mead. Anglers will fish for a grand prize package that includes a Bass Cat Puma FTD paired with a Mercury 250 ProXS Optimax plus a $50,000 cash prize for a full 150-boat field.

WAYNE Breazeale’s wire-to-wire win earned the 2017 California Open championship with a total weight of 76.14.

AAA JAMES Bunker also claimed a wire-to-wire win with a tournament total of 61.93.
