SAN CLEMENTE — Fishworks’ Lawrance Quigley and wife Jamie will once again be attending the Western Outdoor News Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot tournament, providing $125 Fishworks Clothing certificates for various event awards and drawings and doing what they do best – enjoying the fishing, surfing and beaches surrounding Land’s End!

“I grew up around the Cabo tournaments and coming from the long range background of chasing giant yellowfin, the Tuna Jackpot is the perfect event for the Fishworks apparel I design,” said Lawrance, who is also known as Squig. “I would drive and fly down to Baja on vacation with my parents. My mom and I used to fly to Palmilla on the DC3s. We drove down for Christmas in 1975, the year the road opened up all the way to Cabo. Once I got into high school and got my license, I started driving down myself. I would say I have done the drive over 100 times since.”

An action sports clothing designer for companies like Lost and Oakley for many years, Squig has lately devoted all his time to Fishworks, working alongside Jamie in their San Clemente facility. Both are avid anglers and Jamie landed a 55-pound wahoo on a fun trip with local skipper Steve “Murph” Murphy on the first day last year’s WON tournament.

While the Quigleys were just out for a leisurely run, during the 2016 tourney plenty of Tuna Jackpot anglers were serious about tracking down the big bucks available in the wahoo/dorado optional jackpot. The minimum qualifying weight is 30 pounds but that was no problem as Diego Ferrer on the Picante Pride claimed the first day pot of $60,400 with a 53.2-pound wahoo. Tuna Jackpot regular Jamie Rendon on Dr. Pescado III nabbed the same amount of cash with a 52 pounder on Day 2.

Yet the name of the game is the Tuna Jackpot and Squig is no stranger to giant tuna, having just teamed up with some friends this past September to land a 328.5-pound bluefin. His largest tuna out of Los Cabos was caught on the ultimate Baja fishing vessel, the mighty panga.

New logos and prints are just a few of the design aspects of the latest products from Fishworks.

“Back in the day I used to fish a panga down there in Cabo,” notes Quigley. “I had a favorite skipper out of San Jose del Cabo and I caught a 220-pound yellowfin on the Gordo Bank. I caught a 560-pound black marlin from a panga, too.”

Besides being a longtime friend of WON's Cabo event, Fishworks also sponsors Captain Ty Valli on the Reel Quest, who skippered the boat to 2016’s Day Two sweep of the tuna optionals for a grand total of $331,950 thanks to Brad Stevenson’s 274-pound yellowfin.

There’s no doubt that Lawrance, Jamie and Fishworks are all about high-performance clothing for tracking down big fish and having fun in the Baja. Check out Fishworks’ entire new lineup of shirts, boardshorts, walking shorts and headwear and be sure to keep an eye on the WON Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot blog for the latest tournament information.
