When hunting in areas where unleaded ammo is not required, it is difficult to beat the overall performance of bonded core bullets. Among the array of bonded core bullets are those with the Trophy Bonded name, This is one of the original bonded core hunting bullet brands, and has since been acquired by Federal Cartridge Co., which offers these high tech bullets in factory loaded ammunition. The differences between traditional jacketed lead bullets and bonded core bullets focus primarily on the “bonding” of the lead core to the copper jacket. Bonding is achieved either mechanically in a form of soldering or chemically. Either way, the core remains attached to the copper jacket after the bullet has expanded “mushroomed.” Although the bonding itself gives this genre of bullet its designation, the industry has gone way beyond that. Typical bonded core bullets also feature jackets with thicker sides at the base than the nose, and they also typically include some form of skiving or other device in the nose to enhance expansion. And, most of them anymore have a polymer (plastic) tip that aids flight through the air. Thank computers for most of these advances. Federal Premium® is introducing 11 new Trophy Bonded® Tip centerfire rifle offerings. This projectile combines the best technologies to give big game hunters some of the most complete big game bullet available. Factory ammo has come so far in recent times that anymore it is difficult to handload as well. Also, the vast array of bullet designs and weights available mean that virtually any conceivable hunting situation can be addressed with precisely the right loading. We are talking true high tech here. The Trophy Bonded Tip provides great weight retention, excellent penetration and impressive in-flight characteristics. Federal’s engineering team took the heralded Trophy Bonded® Bear Claw® platform and added numerous features for a substantial increase in performance. A neon, translucent polymer tip and boat-tail design for flat trajectory and improved accuracy are combined with a solid copper shank to crush bone. Trophy Bonded Tip won’t explode or violently disrupt on impact—it will drive deep and penetrate while staying in tact. Exterior skiving on the nickel-plated bullet ensures optimum expansion at all ranges. These loads also feature a nickel-plated case for easier extraction.
