MLPA LOG: Trust Betrayed

WON’S NEW MONTH-LONG JUST FOR THE HALIBUT DERBY IS IDEAL FOR KAYAK NATION

Will You Cash In?

DANA POINT -- Kayak halibut hunters are faced with a terrific shot to show their abilities. WON’s inaugural Dana Point Just for the Halibut Derby is definitely kayak winnable.

This new contest spans the entire month of May, and most crucially for kayakers, when and how you fish is completely up to you. Just stick within the DFG regulations.

Anglers can fish from the platform of their choice – private boat, sportboat, or from shore – and switch it up at will, but I know several halibut hot sticks who wouldn’t dream of putting down the paddle.

Boundaries? How about the entire Southern California bight? Stay between Pt Conception and the Mexican border and you’ll be fine.

About the toughest part of this event other than catching the fish is the weigh in. Dana Wharf Sportfishing is the official destination station. Pop your intact flattie on ice and truck it on over along with your derby entry card and you’re good to go.

You probably want to hear about the prizes. First, think of this. Dana Point itself is well known in kayak fishing lore. This is the spot that gave up 46-pound door mat to kayak angler Julia Benak in 2006. Guess what boys? She topped that day off with a 34. Best of all, no power boats allowed at this spot!

With that out of the way, let’s move on to the goodies. There are weekly drawings that anyone who weighed a fish that week could win. And a  Yamaha generator when its all said and done – that one’s up for grabs to anyone’s who’s entered, fish or not.

The heaviest fish caught on a kayak will get someone a brand new Hobie courtesy of Dana Point Jetski. Did you score your big halibut while loafing on a sportboat? That’s good for Dana Wharf Sportfishing 1 Year Pass (holy golden ticket!). The heaviest private boat flatty is good for a Lowrance electronics package.

Everyone who finishes in the top ten will receive a fantastic prize package including: a Cal Star GG1967 series rod; Avet SX series MC casting reel; Costa Del Mar sunglasses; Plano tackle box; Lowrance hand held GPS unit; assortment of Seaguar Fluorcarbon lines; assortment of Berkley Saltwater Gulp baits; assortment of Berkley Big Game fishing line; assortment of Spiderwire Braided fishing line; Big Hammer lures; $100 Owner saltwater hook assortment; Woody Wax; and a commemorative plaque. If you had to buy it, this goody bag would set you back about a grand.

But that’s not all. The heaviest halibut garners the grand prize, a Rancho Leonero trip for two valued at more than $1,000. Its one a kayaker can legitimately claim – there are plenty of talented anglers who fish on plastic. Are you listening Malibu crew? Mark Pierpont found himself a 35-lb’er last year good for 3rd in the boater dominated MDRA Halibut Derby. Baytubers? One of you is always nabbing a monster.  DPKFM? You have home field advantage. Show us what you’ve got!

Participants can sign up at prior to the contest or any time during the event up until May 31st. Fishermen can sign up at Dana Wharf Sportfishing or the Western Outdoor Publications office in San Clemente. You can also print a contest entry form from the PDF entry form available at www.wonews.com.
