Split Decision! A Tale of Two Brothers

Complete 2017 WON Cabo Tuna Jackpot Results!
Best Tuna Jackpot Ever Says Pat McDonell!

team estrella del norte and the winning 338
STELLAR START — The 2017 Western Outdoor News Cabo Tuna Jackpot took off running when the first fish to the scales on the opening day of the comptetion turned out to be the biggest of the event, this 338-pound yellowfin tuna taken on the Inner Gordo aboard the Estrella del Norte. That made team captain James Rosenwald of St. Croix, MN, right, a two time winner of the Tuna Jackpot and put Victor Locklin of Corona, standing next to Rosenwald, into the top spot after many years fishing the event. CABO SAN LUCAS -- Incredible fishing for giant yellowfin tuna vaulted the Estrella del Norte and team captain James Rosenwald of Saint Croix into the pantheon of the Western Outdoor News Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot as the only two-time winners of the overall Tuna Jackpot Championship thanks to a 338-pound yellowfin tuna caught the first day worth a grand total of $252,425.

Rosenwald, who won in 2012 on the Estrella del Norte, was joined in the winner's circle this time around by Victor Locklin of Corona, who adopted an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" strategy that resulted in his first overall victory during a long Tuna Jackpot career.

Team captain Rosenwald gave credit to the La Playita born and raised crew of Captain Luis Roberto Beltran Cazessus and Adrian Miranda Camacho for putting them on the fish and Locklin noted he was able to bring some refined techniques by fishing for cow yellowfin several times on trips out Puerto Vallarta. Their fish was caught on the Inner Gordo Bank and their check reflects wins in all but the $10,000 daily.

In all there were 14 tuna weighed that were over 200 pounds, including three over 300 pounds, during the two-day Cabo San Lucas event, a new Tuna Jackpot record. That includes two fish caught the second day by teams that just missed the 6 p.m. deadline to be in the area of the Gray Taxidermy Weigh Station docks. Those two fish weighed 325 and 289 pounds.

The second place Tuna Jackpot tuna was a first-day 305-pounder by Team Turbo Tuna on the Judy Judy by Francisco Segovia, Gerardo Banaga and Jose Banaga, all from San Jose del Cabo. Blocked from the optionals by the champion fish, they were paid $7,250 for their runner up tuna.

Third overall Tuna Jackpot credit and a check for $3625 went to the 264-pound tuna caught the first day on the Zorro by the Come and Take It Team of Keith Gelfand, Shauni Gelfand and Arthur Diestel of Richmond, TX and Mitchell McKerlie of Sugarland, TX

Tequila Teaser team members celebrate Vaquera cash cow win
GORDO GRAB — The Tequila Teasers team — Adam Morse of Tampa, FL, Mark Daniel of Redlands, and Mark Rayor of Los Barriles — hoist their check for $132,800 high. Scoring the second biggest payday of the 2017 Tuna Jackpot was the Tequila Teasers team of Mike Daniels of Redlands, Adam Morse of Tampa, FL, and Mark Rayor and Diego Romero of Los Barriles on the Vaquera thanks to a 239-pound yellowfin caught on the Outer Gordo during the second and final day of the tournament.

The Vaquero's fish was actually not the biggest tuna caught the second day, but the 248-pound tuna caught on the Sundancer was not in the daily tuna jackpots.

The Vaquero's $500, $1000, $2000 and $3000 daily payouts combined for a check worth $132,800 for the East Cape boat.

The Overtime's 184-pound tuna the first day claimed the remaining $10,000 jackpot and the team of Charles Girot, Jose Alfredo Ruiz, Albert Van Vorkum and Mike Vorderstosse won a cool $60,000 for their investment.

By the luck of the draw a couple day two tuna weighed exactly the same and both boats were in the $5000 and $10,000 jackpots. The Reel Quest and Sneak Attack are both Cabo-based and as strange as it was for two tuna to weigh 195 pounds, the boats are friendly and both boats carry a Bojorquez brother as a mate.

They decided to split the $118,000 pot down the middle rather than toss a coin (the tiebreaker by rule), each team splitting up $59,000. Brad Stevenson of Northbrook, IL, Henry Arras of Temecula, Bill Savage of Las Vegas, NV and Jesus Roelas of Cabo San Lucas were the team members on the Reel Quest, while Rene Bonneval, Hector Rodriguez, Rene Osbaldo Moreno and Richard Steven Miller fished the Sneak Attack.

For the first time in Tuna Jackpot history the total jackpot pool in the $1000 wahoo/dorado exceeded $100 Grand, coming in at $103, 200.

A 41-pound wahoo won $51, 600 the first day for Texas Tuna Chasers team Kurtis Wilcox of San Antonio, TX, Todd Menger of New Braunfels, TX, and Chris and Tammy Teague of Granite Falls, NC.

A similarly-sized wahoo was brought to the scales late in the second day, but the team neglected to enter the daily jackpot, so the 36.9-pound wahoo taken by the Ndemi team of Job DeHorta of Upland, Otto Paredes of La Puente and James Colner of Upland cashed in $51,600.

The names, numbers and highlights above barely scratch the surface of what Tournament Director Pat McDonell called "the best Tuna Jackpot in history!" so be sure to check out next week's extensive special section in WON detailing the many sponsors, parties, contests and charity efforts that made the 2017 Western Outdoor News Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot stand out above the 18 other fantastic tournaments that preceded.
