PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO — If you have ever dreamed of bagging the cow tuna of a lifetime, this may just be the best chance you will have this year.

Western Outdoor News recently announced a new limited-load 3 1/2-day charter aboard the sportfisher, Success, open to just SIX anglers.

“We feel that having a small group like this gives the very best fishing experience for the angler and the best chance at landing the fish they have always dreamed of,” said

owner/operator Captain Cary Dodson.

Running out of the marina at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the 60-foot sportfisher is the perfect platform for the task of tackling big tuna.

“We wanted to have the design of the boat perfect for this small-sized group so years ago we rebuilt Success to our specifications, including an air-conditioned galley salon and bunkrooms,” continued Capt. Dodson.

The oversized 3-ton RSW fish-hold aboard Success keeps the gill-and-gutted catch in 28-degree seawater, without freezing the fish. The crew processes at sea, including vacuum packing the fillets, so anglers need only to bring a soft-side 36-quart cooler to transport their catch home.

“Providing top-quality service along with the best fishing opportunities is what we are all about at Success Sportfishing,” says Erica Dodson, who runs the office operations for the company. The commitment to a top-level fishing experience is why they have a full-time chef aboard, as well as 4 to 5 deck crew on their Puerto Vallarta trips.

While every trip can’t get cow tuna, recent trips averaged 60- to 180-pound tuna, along with assorted other exotics such as dorado and amberjack.

The WON/Success charter is scheduled for March 15-19, which offers some of the best big-fish opportunities.

“Partnering with Avet, Seeker and Berkeley, we have all the gear needed for our anglers,” explained, Capt. Dodson. “They needn’t bring anything more than a change of clothes and a soft-side cooler. Some opt for a lighter set-up of their own to throw poppers, but it’s not really necessary.” The boat provides 30-wide and 50-wide Avet reels, but anglers can bring their own reels if they wish.

“Generally, we fly-line our large caballito baits most of the time, but occasionally put out the kite with flyers or big squid. We will load hundreds of baits before the passengers board on Friday,” says Capt. Dodson.

Success departs at about 6:00 p.m. on Friday, the 15th of March, allowing anglers to fly into P.V. that day and catch a short cab ride over to the marina. Returning is just as easy with the boat getting in early enough on the 19th to allow flights home the same day.

Of course, Puerto Vallarta is also a great place to explore if anglers want to stretch their trip either before or after fishing.

Once on board Success, everything except alcohol and Mexican permits is included for the $1,950 price tag, including filet and packing of the catch.

As staff writer for Western Outdoor News I will be along for this one, getting plenty of photos of all the action for a later article in the paper. Your fish of a lifetime could be featured along with the rest of the exciting story.

With only six spots open for the trip it is bound to sell out quickly. Some spots have already been taken, so if you want this, better get on board soon by going online to WONews.com and click on the WON EVENTS tab, and then look in the 2019 Charters.
