SAN CLEMENTE — Western Outdoor News has unveiled the first of a series of sponsor-supported fishing seminars, and things get kicked off with a couple of great ones.

WON Fishing Schools are sponsored by Daiwa, and the first 20 attendees at each seminar will receive a Daiwa hat, 12-can cooler and pliers. That’s a $48 value just for showing up early!

All participants will be entered into the drawing for a Daiwa Saltist 40H ($259 value) and Tactical Soft Side Tackle Box ($179) and one of two Engel 80-quart coolers ($299)


The first WON Fishing School event is being hosted by Island Tackle in Carson.

The date for this seminar is Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. The seminar will cover targeting bluefin tuna here locally in SoCal and topics will include productive tackle and methods including kite fishing. Bob Hoose will be the speaker.

Bob Hoose, accomplished SoCal angler who has fished with some of the best captains along the coast. Hoose works for Costa, does sales for Seeker Rods, Mold Craft, and Tailchaser lures. During the Fall, Bob is usually out every weekend on his 36-foot Pacifica, the Prospector, targeting marlin, tuna, and even swordfish.

The second school will be hosted by Angler’s Choice Tackle and held at Southwestern Yacht Club in San Diego on Thursday, Sept. 5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the seminar will cover local marlin fishing, and the speakers are Jessie Henry and Bob Hoose. Topic will be Targeting Marlin in SoCal — Covering New and Innovative Tackle and Techniques.

For years Henry has worked with expert crews in billfish tournaments worldwide. He has helped introduce to Southern California some innovative natural dead-bait presentations for billfish. Hoose also has an extensive history of targeting local billfish and enjoys using knowledge from his travels for local marlin fishing.
