WON/YAMAHA BASS CHAMPIONSHIP!

More liberal fishing hours, lower entry fee and a new yellowtail optional added to third annual tourney this weekend, Aug. 1-2

DANA POINT -- SoCal’s next Yamaha Series Jackpot stop is the Dana Point Yamaha Bass Championship slated for this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2, at the refurbished Embarcadero facility.

“It was a huge success in its second year,” said event director McNear. “We moved it back two weeks due to scheduling conflicts, but calico and sand bass fishing is still in its summer mode. Teams asked for a few changes, and we listened.

“Teams will now be released at 8:30 p.m. after checking in at the Jig Stop Tackle Shop on Friday night, instead of a 3 a.m. release, although teams will still be able to sign up and get supplies early Saturday morning 5 to 7 a.m. at the Dana Wharf Sportfishing office in the morning a few yards from the launch ramp.”

The weigh-in for bass, calico or sand bass, is for up to three legal bass. No dead calicos will be weighed in. The optional yellowtail is a one-fish weigh-in.

And, McNear added, while yellowtail do not count in the standings, they will be an optional jackpot target species.

“The optionals are again $100, $200 and $300 per species at all events with a 90 percent payback,” said McNear. Those are optionals, of course. The idea is to get back to a circuit that’s fun and affordable.”

At the first event at Catalina at Two Harbors on Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18 some serious money was given away nearly $50,000 in cash plus prizes, including a trip for four people to the Van Wormer Resorts on the East Cape.

The early bird raffle is still a factor. The Early Bird prize package, including a Yamaha generator, will be worth more than $2,000 in sponsors prizes, just like at Catalina. The deadline to get under the wire for the $85 entry fee per person before it rises to $100 is 5 p.m. on Friday, July 25. Teams are allowed two to six people. All people on a boat must be entered or be disqualified. Fifty teams were in the early bird drawing at Catalina.
