2009 BIG BEAR LAKE TROUTFEST

Dear Big Bear TroutfesT angler:

It’s that time of year again when anglers gather at Big Bear Lake for a relaxing weekend of fishing and fun in an alpine setting. The ever popular Big Bear Lake October TroutfesT is once again approaching and we don’t want you, your family, and friends to miss out on the fun and excitement that has made the TroutfesT the largest and most successful fishing event held at Big Bear lake for the past five years.

For those who are not familiar with the Big Bear October TroutfesT, this is a two-day trout fishing derby held on Big Bear Lake which will award prizes based on the five heaviest two-day stringers taken in each of the Adult male, Adult female, Junior male, and Junior female (16 yrs & younger) divisions. An overall big fish award will also be given to the largest trout taken during the tournament.

The divisional prizes are not all that goes on at the TroutfesT. For the past 5 years, Western Outdoor News in conjunction with our many sponsors have stocked the lake with tagged fish that are worth some pretty impressive prizes. Just ask Adrian Flores of Monrovia who won a $30,000 truck in 2007 by catching one of the specially tagged fish that were placed in the lake. For 2009, the Ford Dealers of Southern California will be tagging a fish worth a brand new $30,000 Ford F150 Super Crew 4x2 truck. Big Bear Sporting Goods will have a tagged fish worth $10,000 and YUM bait will also be on board with a tagged fish worth $30,000. All told, combine this with the 26 other tagged fish swimming in Big Bear Lake and you have a total tagged fish value of nearly $80,000.

Aside from the tagged fish, the TroutfesT awards the top five anglers based upon a two-day total weight in the Adult male, Adult female, Junior male, and Junior female divisions. Awards will consist of trophies and sponsor provided prizes. For our Junior anglers, we will have a special raffle drawing for some nice prizes for the Junior male and Junior female anglers. Best of all, the TroutfesT looks to make everyone a winner regardless of whether you catch a fish or not via the multitude of raffle prizes we distribute at the Sunday afternoon awards ceremony.

The first 600 anglers who sign up for the TroutfesT will receive sponsor provided goodie bags with a total value around $40 each. All anglers who sign up will receive event hats and a jar of YUM bait. Entry into this event is limited, so sign up early! Despite the tough economy and increased production costs, Western Outdoors is holding the line for our contestants by keeping the adult entry fees at $75 and junior entry fee at $50. For your entry, you will be included in the TroutfesT competition, the Blind Bogey contest, Saturday afternoon BBQ, raffle, and of course be eligible for the $8,000 Lowe boat & Mercury motor grand raffle prize courtesy of Miller’s Landing.

Our highly popular Blind Bogey contest will also be back with all anglers included. All you have to do is have your Sunday total weight comes closest to a pre-selected weight with out going over to win. Last year, we paid out $5,000 in blind bogey cash with many of our Junior anglers being the lucky winners. Top prize in 2008 was $1,000.

There will also be a special drawing for a Sea Eagle inflatable boat valued over $1,000 provided by the folks at Panther Martin lures. Simply bring the package from any Panther Martin lure and deposit it into our special raffle bin for your chance to win this prize. The more Panther Martin lure packages you deposit, the better your odds. The drawing for this prize will be held during the awards ceremony on Sunday October 4th.

The Big Bear Lake Municipal water district in conjunction with the California Department of Fish and Game will again be planting nearly $15,000 worth of Trout in the lake including pen raised fish up to 9 pounds in the days prior to the competition. Look for plenty of fish to be brought to the scales by anglers of all ages.

The folks at B’s Backyard BBQ will provide a Saturday BBQ for all of our tournament participants. This will run concurrently with the Saturday weigh-ins. Those who are not a part of the tournament are also invited to join in on the festivities. Food service will be available on Sunday as well.

Anglers may also wish to check out our vendor’s row where many of the sponsors who make the TroutfesT possible display their products. Talk first hand with manufacturer’s representative to get tips, techniques, and the latest tackle.

The weekend festivities peak on Sunday after the weigh-in as TroutfesT anglers gather their lawn chairs in the Big Bear Municipal Water District parking lot for the biggest prize give-away of any Big Bear fishing event. Hang on to your ticket, as you may be one of dozens of lucky winners. Who knows, you might even take home a new boat!

As in previous years, the TroutfesT angler check-in will be held Friday afternoon and evening October 2nd at the Big Bear Municipal Water District. Late sign ups, if any are still available, will also be taken on site on Friday evening but will be assessed a $15 late entry fee. An emergency check-in will be held at the Big Bear Municipal Water District office on Saturday morning from 4-6am. It is strongly recommended that you check-in Friday to avoid the last minute crowd on Saturday morning. Late entries will not be taken on Saturday morning.
