We are sold out, but please join us in the upcoming events!

If you and your family are ready for a relaxing weekend of fishing and fun in an alpine setting, then the Western Outdoor News Big Bear TroutfesT might be exactly what you are looking for.

The first Big Bear TroutfesT was held in 2005 with nearly 650 anglers in attendance and over $100,000 in cash and prizes available for our participants. Since 2005, the TroutfesT has grown into the most popular fishing event in the Big Bear Lake community, selling out at 1,000 anglers!

The principle behind the TroutfesT is simple. 4 angling divisions exist including adult male, adult female, junior male (16 or younger) and junior female (16 or younger). Each individual angler is allowed to bring to the scales 5 rainbow trout each day, 10 inches in length or longer. The heaviest total weight brought to the scales over the course of the two days of competition will win that category. Awards will consist of trophies and sponsor provided prizes. For our Junior anglers, we will have a special raffle that will once again consist of his and her mountain bikes courtesy of K-Mart in Big Bear.

You might ask what these sponsor provided prizes are? Well, in 2007, we had over $130,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs including trucks, boats, Houseboat vacation packages, Alaskan and Mexican fishing adventures, Big Bear vacation packages, trolling motors, electronics, gift certificates, rod & reel combos, gift baskets, and much much more.

The first 600 anglers who sign up will receive sponsor provided goodie bags valued around $50 each. Anglers who sign up after this will receive event hats. At the request of the Water District, this year’s event is once again limited to 1,000 anglers and will be closed once this number is reached, so sign up early! Entry fees remain unchanged for 2008 with an Adult entry running $75 and Junior entry running $50. For your entry, you will be included in the TroutfesT competition, the Blind Bogey contest, Saturday afternoon BBQ, and of course be eligible for the grand raffle prize.

Another popular feature of the Big Bear TroutfesT is the Blind Bogey Contest. All you have to do is have your two-day total weight come closest to a pre-selected weight with out going over to win. Last year, we paid out $5,000 in blind bogey cash with many with the top prize of $1,000 being won by local Big Bear resident Dave Essex. Every TroutfesT contestant is automatically entered into the Blind Bogey Contest.

Our tagged fish program will also be back. Last year, Adrian Flores proved to be the luckiest TroutfesT angler of all as the first rainbow trout he’d ever caught was one of the 30-tagged fish planted prior to the competition. On Sunday, Adrian opened a sealed envelope to discover that he had won a $25,000 Tundra truck from Toyota of San Bernardino. Congratulations to Adrian. The good news for all participants is that we are working on something even bigger for 2008. While it is still in the planning stages, we are striving to increase the number of tagged fish up for grabs this year!

The awards ceremonies on Sunday culminate with Western Outdoors giving away the Grand Raffle Prize of a boat and motor package to one lucky TroutfesT participant. Each angler receives a raffle ticket a check-in which is good for the hundreds of raffle prizes we give away, including the boat and motor package! In 2008, Tony Haubert had that lucky ticket and took home a Crestliner Canadian 14’ boat and trailer including a Mercury 25hp outboard motor, MotorGuide trolling motor, and Lowrance electronics – a $10,000 package!

The Big Bear Lake Municipal water district in conjunction with the California Department of Fish and Game will again be planting thousands of pounds of Trout in the lake including pen raised fish up to 9 pounds in the days prior to the competition. Look for plenty of fish to be brought to the scales by anglers of all ages.

The folks at B’s Backyard BBQ will provide a Saturday BBQ for all of our tournament participants. This will run concurrently with the Saturday weigh-ins. Those who are not a part of the tournament are also invited to join in on the festivities. Food service will be available on Sunday as well.

The festivities peak on Sunday after the weigh-in as TroutfesT anglers gather their lawnchairs in the Big Bear Municipal Water District parking lot for the biggest prize give-away of any Big Bear fishing event. Hang on to your raffle ticket as you may be one of dozens of lucky winners. Who knows, you might even take home a new boat!

Check-in will be held Friday afternoon and evening at the Big Bear Municipal Water District. Late sign ups, if any are still available, will also be taken on site on Friday evening but will be assessed a $15 late entry fee. An emergency check-in will be held at the Big Bear Municipal Water District office on Saturday morning from 4-6am. It is strongly recommended that you check-in Friday to avoid the last minute crowd on Saturday morning.
