WON CENCAL FRESH REPORTS Limits of kokanee, possible By Bill karr/WON Staff Writer SHAVER LAKE
— Limits of kokanee are still possible at Shaver Lake, but most trollers are ending up with a mix of rainbows and kokanee. While the kokanee are on their way out, and upcoming trout plant should keep anglers happy through November. “The kokanee are declining in numbers as the spawning cycle begins, but the fish are not showing signs of red yet,” said guide Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters. “The kokanee are moving, and change their depths daily.” He said a troller can get as many kokanee at 12 feet as at 45 feet, and he’s been getting both at 12 feet using Trout Busters or Capt Jack’s No. 1 pink Super Hochie behind a Shaver Lake dodger with a tip of corn. “The trout outlook will be improving about September 8 when DFG will plant 2,000 catchable trout and 650 trophy trout between 3 and 5 pounds each,” Nichols said. “This plant should insure a good fall fishery into the end of November.” He said that bankies are still hit or miss this week on trout, and that the smallmouth bass bite is still good in the rocky areas of the lake with crickets and small spinners. The lake capacity is 68 percent with surface water temperatures at 67 and daytime highs of mid-80s. ![]() |
