Problem at Bass Lake with sediment; DFG stops workers dumping rocks

By RON WILSON/Won Staff WriterPublished: May 24, 2012

BASS LAKE — Todd Wittwer of Kokanee.net Guide Service said there is a layer of sediment in the water at Bass Lake from the dam toward Miller’s Landing, but it’s not affecting his fishing.

Workers were dumping rocks at the face of the dam and the sediment from the work made its way out into the lake. He said they are hoping the sediment dissipates quickly after the work on the dam was stopped.

Wittwer has been catching kokanee on Assassin Spinners or Radical Glow Tubes in chartreuse, pink, or pink ice with a Hyperplaid or Vance’s copper-chartreuse dodgers. The kokanee are 15 to 16 inches long, holding at depths from 20 to 25 feet in the mornings then dropping down to 30 to 35 feet deep later in the day.

There are three tagged trout worth $500 still in the lake, but these tags can only be redeemed by registered participant of the 32nd annual Bass Lake Trout Derby.

"Bass are on a good bite using plastics and live worms," said Tom Tuso of Pines Marina, "the bass are in the shallows around fallen trees and the shallow docks. The perch and crappie haven’t showed up yet."
