Kernville: Flows finally fishable on Upper Kern River

BY MIKE STEVENS/WON Staff WriterPublished: Aug 07, 2019

KERNVILLE — Conditions on the Upper Kern River are finally leveling off at near optimal levels, and continued stocking – without a lot of angler pressure – during blowout-status spring runoff means the river is full of trout.

Bakersfield fly fisherman, Sergio Martinez reached out to WON with the kind of report bug-slingers have been looking for after weeks keeping largely off the river as snowmelt following a very productive winter blasted through the canyon making fishing near-impossible if not unsafe.

“Fishing has been good, and flows on the Kern have mellowed out for better fishing access and wading,” said Martinez. “Various techniques such as nymphing, streamers, and Buggers have been successful.”

His recommended fly list includes Pheasant Tails, egg patterns and streamers, and he said the flows around Kernville are dipping below 1,000 cfs, and the water is “crystal clear.”

FLOWS IN THE Kern River have finally dropped to a fishable level, the water is clear, the river is well stocked and quality trout like this caught by Bakersfield bug slinger, Derek Erquhart.
