Conditions on Upper Kern River finally normalizing, trout fishing solid

BY MIKE STEVENS/WON Staff WriterPublished: Aug 18, 2017

KERNVILLE — Due to the post “Miracle Winter” runoff, the Upper Kern River has been largely unfishable, and more importantly, dangerous, for most of the summer, but flows have finally dropped below 1,000 cubic feet per second, and fishing conditions are excellent. This section of the Kern still received its scheduled trout plants this whole time, so there are plenty of stocked fish to be caught as well as wild trout.

“I’m super stoked right now,” said guide Guy Jeans of Kern River Fly Shop, “the river has come down to about 900 cfs, and this is when it this is when it gets good up here on the Upper Kern. The river is starting to come down, the water is clear and the water temperature is about 60 degrees.”

Jeans is doing a lot of nymphing with multiple-fly rigs, and he’s getting a lot of grabs on tungsten Yellow Sallies. He said stripping black wooly buggers is connecting long rodders with rainbows as well. They key there is casting across and downstream and stripping back up through the seams. Some anglers are getting into some dry fly action during mayfly hatches in the last hour or so of the day.
