MONTEREY BAY — Lingcod bit baits in the south of Monterey Bay, halibut bit swimbaits in the north and striped bass bit lures and baits in the middle. Shore fishing improved dramatically, throughout the Bay, from the previous week. Anglers fishing the Coast Guard Pier in Monterey scored lingcod this week by dropping and making short flips with sardine baits to the rocks below and a short cast away. “It was like flippin’ for bass in freshwater,” said Gianfranco Guarrera of The Compass in Seaside, who reported seeing a 10 pounder caught right before sunset at Del Monte. “Swimbaits are working. Color doesn’t matter but size does, with 4.5-inch or 5-inch swimbaits proving most effective,” said Guarrera. Matt Diaz at The Tackle Box in Salinas said, “Stripers are biting from Watsonville to Monterey, running 18-inches to 26-inches (3 to 7 pounds) and biting swimbaits, bloodworms and sand crabs.” Skilled striper fishers aggressively worked the beaches looking for signs of baitfish behind the waves, which sometimes signals a hotspot. Robin at Santa Cruz Boat Rental reported two big halibut hooked by wharf anglers casting swimbaits off the wharf and working them back slowly over the sand. A 25 pounder was landed Saturday. Another very large halibut was fought and lost, due to a broken line, the evening before. Robin also reported an ongoing perch bite along the wharf for fishers using pieces of shrimp for baits. |
