Monterey salmon bite constant, surf stripers now in the mix

MONTEREY — Monterey Bay salmon fishing remained constant in terms of locale and techniques, however the average size of fish increased. At the same time, a stronger effort for surf zone stripers resulted in increased catches.

“These are totally different fish…really nice stuff, feeding on massive schools of krill about 8 miles off of Moss Landing,” said Capt. Chris Arcoleo of Chris’ Sportfishing, after reporting fish up to 18 pounds but with an average of 10 to 11 pounds, up a few pounds from the average fish from last week.

The Star of Monterey’s top day this week was Thursday when 16 anglers scored 30 fish. “We’re mooching with 4-ounce banana sinkers tied in-line, with 6-foot leaders to 3/0 barbless circle hooks baited with anchovies,” explained Capt. Arcoleo. Capt. Brian Cutting of Randy’s Sportfishing reported scoring well 15 miles out of harbor, fishing quite shallow.

Most private boats out of area harbors continued trolling tactics to average one fish per rod. Experienced and lucky boaters were back at the docks early with limits of salmon to 15 pounds.

“Hoochies and spoons are the common denominators among successful salmon fishers,” reported Gianfranco Guarrera of The Compass in Seaside. He also reported that his customers caught a few 10- to 15-pound striped bass in the surf at Del Monte. These were not incidental catches by surf perchers. The A-team of striper fishers began working area beaches in earnest with swimbaits, poppers and Hair Razors.
