Local reds and windy afternoons

MORRO BAY — decent morning weather was the rule through most of the week, along the Central Coast. Yet windy weekends and afternoons took their toll, too. The big deep water reds locally made it all work.

"Ocean and wind conditions remained fairly stable for the week. More gale force winds entered the picture for Saturday, May 13, shutting down the fishing." said Bruce Harwood at Virg's Landing in Morro Bay.

Both Virg's and Morro Bay Landing's boats stayed in over the windy weekend, for the second weekend in a row. However, the current forecast calls for calm to kick in starting Friday this week.

Rita G ran a shallow water trip Thursday and Capt. Frank Kelly put the 18 aboard onto lings big-time, putting up a final score of 36 lings (limits), 58 reds and 68 assorted.

Harwood added, "The good perch fishing picked up again after the windy conditions abated. Still getting reports of fish to 3 pounds, and still selling out of lugworms."

Morro Bay Landing's fleet simply crushed the local reds, with the Avenger finding quality reds in 1/2-day turf, 360 and 15 lings for 36, 1/2-day anglers. Her other trips during the week all had monster red counts. The Endeavor had 200 red, 28 misc and 13 ling for 38 anglers Thursday.

The Avila Sport Launch posted 22 boats for Thursday, 18 lings, 3/4-limits of rockfish, 3 salmon and a halibut.

At Patriot Sportfishing Avila Beach the Phenix was out every day during the week, staying in over the windy weekends. Catches were good, including 24 lings for 14 one day, along with limit rockcod fishing.
