Weekend glass-off just in time

MORRO BAY/AVILA — After a rough week along the Central Coast the waters glassed off just in time for the weekend. While Monday offered great weather, the south winds blew and the rain flew through the week. Finally Friday dawned calm and waters remained so through the weekend. The fleet was out and anglers loaded up.

For whatever reason the limits-the-rule bite backed off just a bit over the weekend for the Central Coast party boats. The longer trips got 'em of course, but the shorter trips, while still loading up, posted numbers just under the bar.

At the same time, private boaters crushed 'em hard. Port San Luis Sportlaunch posted "Limits on rock cod and ling cod all weekend."

The Fiesta took 26 folks on a "long range" trip up the coast Sunday and limited all the way around, bagging 52 lings, 75 reds, 75 coppers and 110 other rockfish. The big fish was a 25-pound ling for Brian Bullock of Morro Bay.

Friday the Avenger was out with 27, 1/2-day anglers and got the job done, 270 rockfish with 60 reds, 2 lings. At Virg's the Rita G was out on 1/2-day and finished limits for her 14 anglers.

However, Saturday 35 anglers fished the Fiesta on 1/2-day and sacked 242 rockfish, an excellent catch, but not quite limits.

At Patriot's Avila the Patriot fished 1/2-day Sunday with 21 and bagged limits for all as usual. However, there were a couple of local trips that didn't quite finish up.

In Morro Bay this is the last week of brant season, so get out there if you're going to.
