DFG is forced to negotiate to keep salmon, trout and steelhead stocking prorgams alive The future of fishing in California is at stake. Anglers and businesses need to e-mail or mail the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and detail how important fish stocking programs are to their recreational enjoyment and economic well-being. The e-mail address for comments is dfghatcheryeir@dfg.ca.gov or you can send a letter to: Department of Fish and Game Attn: Mr. Jim Starr, Fisheries Branch 830 S Street Sacramento, CA 95814 Here’s the background: elitist lawyers from Stanford University, now acting as counsel for the Center for Biodiversity, successfully sued the DFG and can now block all stocking of trout, steelhead and salmon in the state’s waterways. The lawyers’ suit argued that California’s centuries old fish planting programs need to have an environmental impact report and a mitigation plan for native species impacted. The state’s economic crisis and emphasis on other programs has left the DFG strapped for cash and manpower and they asked for and received an extension until 2010 to complete the EIR. But the judge said that in the meantime the DFG must “meet the spirit” of the ruling and the department has until Nov. 24 to negotiate an interim plan. Your input could make a difference when DFG negotiators and lawyers present the negotiated package to the judge next Monday. Act now! ![]() |
