EASTERN SIERRA REPORT

BISHOP—In preparation for this Saturday’s Blake Jones Derby, Bishop area catching will see a definite shot in the arm this week. On the schedule are Alpers rainbows, heavyweight DFG broodstock along with healthy plants of catchables on the agenda for late in the week.

This past week saw a continued rise in the Owens River flow—376 cfs as of Sunday High water levels has slowed down the time on the water catching ratio. Advise from local tackle shops are rig with enough lead to fish right on the bottom in the deeper holes. Reports this past week of DFG catchables with an occasional Alpers making a showing.

Pleasant Valley Reservoir anglers posted better scores, mainly stockers.  A productive location has been the dam with floating baits. Because of the water level, the wild trout section of the river has been classified as “blown out.”

Up the hill, Hot Creek is producing for fly fishermen working the late morning to early afternoon window.  The Troutfitter in Mammoth Lakes is telling customers to start out with small midges, size 20 to 22. When the water warms a bit, go larger, size 16 Hares Ears, Pheasant tails and Blue Wing Olives.

The road is closed at the end of the pavement. Look for about a ¾-mile hike in. The snow is packed with a surface about like walking on pavement.
Hot spot for the fly anglers has been the East Walker River. Anglers are reporting 20-fish and better days. Mornings have been cold, in the single digits, with the bite window late morning to mid-afternoon. Ken’s Sporting Goods reported an angler caught and released a 25-inch brown. Small midges, Blue Wing Olive working. Look for some dry fly action later in the day.
