SAN DIEGO — The public is invited to enter the San Diego Rod and Reel Club’s 29th Annual Big Fish Tournament, which promotes the club’s Kids Fishing Program and we support the Friends of Rollo kids fishing program. The first place prizes for the tournament are: $1,500 for the winning tuna, $1,000 for the largest yellowtail and $750 for the largest IGFA fish (white seabass, halibut or dorado). Quality rods and reels will be awarded for second place winners in each of the three categories. The tournament starts on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 12:01 a.m. and goes to Sunday Aug.19, 10 a.m. There will be weigh-ins on Saturday and Sunday so you can fish until Saturday or Sunday if you want to. The last chance to sign up is at the Captain's Meeting, Friday evening, Aug 17, between 5:30 and 7 p.m. at the Wave sculpture east of the Shelter Island launch ramp. There will be a Big Fish Seminar on Thursday, Aug, 2 starting at 7 p.m. at the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island. The guest speaker will be Capt. Ron Baker from Point Loma Sportfishing. There will also be free fish tacos served and a raffle for great fishing gear. At the end of the seminar there will be a raffle of a rod and reel amongst those who have signed up for the Big Fish Tournament. There will also be a Big Fish Banquet following the tournament on Sunday, Aug.19, at noon at the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island. Tournament entrants attend the banquet for free. The public is invited to the banquet for $30 per person. Tournament prizes will be awarded at the banquet and there will be a big raffle of fishing gear. There is also a ladies raffle and a silent auction will also be held for premium fishing items and trips.
