EASTERN SIERRA REPORT BISHOP—Early March is “wake up” time for Eastern Sierra anglers with the Bishop Chamber of Commerce’s t annual Blake Jones Trout Derby. Going into its 43rd year, The event has become a tradition for anglers looking for an early kickoff for high country waters. Last years’ derby saw more than 1,000 men, women and children anglers taking to the waters of Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens River.On the menu will be DFG catchables along with a bonus plant of broodstock to around the 5-pound mark. Frosting on the cake will be an additional plant of trophy class Alpers rainbows ranging up to 10 pounds. The derby format is basically a blind bogey, with the winning weight unknown until after closing time. Winning bogey weight last year was 1 -ounces. In addition to the blind bogey grand prize, additional prizes are awarded for the heaviest catches in both adult and kids divisions. ![]() • HEAVYWEIGHT HONORS for last year’s Blake Jones Trout Derby went to Shafter angler Dwayne Millien who weighed in this 9-pound, 8-ounce rainbow taken at the East Line Street river crossing. • FLOATUBERS score their share of limits at the Blake Jones Trout Derby. Shafter angler Dwayne Millien nailed down the day’s top weight honors with a 9-pound, 8-ounce rainbow taken from the Owens River. Dwayne topped Bishop angler Ken Lynde’s 9-pound catch also coming from the rive, and there was an impressive showing of catches in the 5-pound plus range. “Hot spots’ for the big fish have been the bridge crossings at Hwy. 6 and East Line Street along with the upper inlet end of the reservoir. Late-winter high country weather is unpredictable, ranging from stormy to warm and sunny and anything in-between. Derby day last March saw blue bird weather in the mid 60s. The best advice is to be prepared. Too much foul weather gear is better than not enough. Several thousand dollars in prizes are up for grabs for several divisions, adults and kids. Big money for the event is the chambers 50-50 drawing. Last year a lucky angler pocketed $2,180, more than enough to pay expenses. Derby day is set for March 13.
