TWO HARBORS — Western Outdoor News is proudly bringing back one of the most popular fishing events in the history of the publication. The WON Catalina White Seabass Jackpot will return to the island in 2018, and Yamaha is also back on board as the title sponsor along with a list of national and local supporters that continues to grow as word gets around and more jump to get involved.

This year, the event will be held Saturday, June 9 to Sunday, June 10, and it will be based out of Isthmus Cove at Two Harbors on Catalina Island, and eligible fishing waters are limited to those surrounding Catalina.

The WON-Yamaha Catalina White Seabass Jackpot has always been a overwhelmingly focused on fishing, not unlike the hard-core white seabass angler himself. The 2018 installment will be no different in that respect. Tournament organizers are taking measures to ensure the event is user friendly throughout. This will include a simple check in, crystal clear tournament rules that will be available to the competitors ahead of time, a basic tournament format, and the event will close with a quick, early-afternoon awards ceremony and raffle.

At that point, the teams will be “cut loose” and free to head back across the channel and arrive with plenty of time to clean the boat and grab some dinner.

There will be no “must be present to win” type banquet to close out the event, participating anglers will be given vouchers at check in can be turned in at West End Galley stuff like breakfast burritos, sandwiches, burgers, soda (refillable) and coffee and other goodies.

About those sponsors, even at this early stage, it’s pretty meaty, and there are more on the way. Along with Yamaha jumping right back in, Catalina Island Company, Avet Reels, Calstar rods, Seaguar, Bluewater Bait Systerms, Tilly’s Marine, Titus Marine Electronics, Allen GMC, Promar and Maurer Marine are already locked in.

Cliff Allen and the crew at Allen GMC are having a little fun with their contribution and awarding Calstar rods to the fourth-place team, the first team out of the money.

Along with the manufacturer and service-related prizes, there are also Catalina travel packages that will be doled out. The Avalon Getaway Package ($1,200 value) includes two nights at the Pavillion Hotel, dinner for two at Avalon Grille and ziplining for two. The Two Harbors package ($800 value) includes two nights at Banning House Lodge, dinner for two at Harbor Reef, and lounge chair and kayak rentals for two. Descanso Beach Club and Harbor Sands have each kicked in chaise lounge rentals for two and $100 in dining credit.

The entry fee is $400 per team of two to four anglers, and no more than four passengers are allowed on participating vessels. Check in on the pier in Two Harbors is mandatory, and open from 7:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Boats will be released to fish at approximately 11:30 a.m on Saturday, and everyone must depart from the Isthmus at Two Harbors to start the tourney. Tournament waters are Catalina only, all other islands and coastal California and Baja are off limits.

The largest single fish (white seabass, yellowtail or halibut) wins and prize money is paid to first through third place. Weigh-in is on Sunday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to noon or until all waiting teams have been logged in at the scale. The weigh-in area will be set up on the beach at the Isthmus at Two Harbors.

The top three will split a $10,000 guaranteed purse, with the top fish scoring $5,000, $3,000 going to second place and $2,000 to third.

Each species will have its own $300, $200 and $100 optionals, and in addition to the cash, a special bonus prize that will be announced in a couple weeks will go to the team within the optionals that lands the biggest yellowtail.

All in all, there are already over $10,000 in prizes up for grabs, and that is above and beyond cash winnings and sponsor prizes and swag.
