Join WON on its annual hosted trip Sept. 15-18 to the Baja Magic Lodge overlooking island waters full of yellows and huge calicos: Cedros Outdoor Adventures will be at the Hall show, so stop by and meet the man who started it all, Jose Luis Sanchez

THE BAJA MAGIC LODGE is perched on a bluff and is a great starting block each day for outstanding fishing on calicos and yellows.

ENSENADA — If you are a diehard plastics or yo-yo angler who loves pulling on monster calico and yellowtail, then space just opened up on your dream trip. Each year WON brings a lucky group down on an exclusive chartered trip to Cedros Island, to stay and fish with the legendary Cedros Outdoor Adventures team. This trip is hosted by WON’s editor Pat McDonell, who leads this small group of 12 anglers down to the island Mecca Sept 15-18 to test their skill and grit against one of the Baja Coast’s best fisheries, which is almost singularly famous for its large calico bass and yellowtail population.

The WON group will meet near the border at 7 a.m., and ride across in a van to the Ensenada Airport, where a private plane will take you to the island. Cedros outdoor Adventures will be waiting there to bring you to the famous Baja Magic lodge, which is beautifully appointed and boasts some of the greatest ocean views on the island. The 4 day/three night format allows for two and a half days of guided fishing on one of their 27-28-foot super-pangas, which are captained by skilled and knowledgeable local guides. All fish processing and freezing is taken care of and your catch will be packaged up for lightweight transportation stateside.

The accommodations on this trip are top notch, from the views, meals, staff, quarters and beyond. McDonell counts this as his favorite place to fish in Baja for yellows, and big bass.

BIG YELLOWS AND calicos and even halibut and white seabass are targets. Looking for a personal best 10- pound calico, This is the place.

“It’s a great fishery, great lee-side island weather and Jose and wife Melanie run a fantastic operation that improves each year. The cliff-top lodge and the ever-improving food, the pangeros continues to push up the bar for anglers,” said McDonell. “Look, this isn’t roughing it. The crew carries rods and packs to the truck that takes you to the marina each morning and puts the gear on the boat for you with coolers of drinks. When you return, they grab all tackle bags and rods for the ride home. Rod racks are outside the rooms and the outfits are gently washed and wiped down. Nice. First class.”

Meals are served in the morning and evening in a setting overlooking the Pacific that is pure and unobstructed in all directions. No phones. Just cigars, sipping scotch, reading, talking and telling stories after fishing all day. All Day. There are liquor and small grocery stores in CedrosTown near the lodge where you can buy liquor. Beer is available at the lodge on an honor system.

HOW LONG CAN you pull on yellows? All day? That can be arranged. This year looks even more promising with cooler water and squid returning.

Cedros Outdoor Adventures pride themselves on being accommodating to any angler, to make their dream trip come to life. There is rental tackle at the island at $10 an outfit, so you don’t even have to bring gear. The weather is always outstanding. If there is wind, the island offers vast regions of protection on the lee side to chase yellow on the surface, or via live mackerel or yo-yo iron or other lure such as Flat Falls. Or you can do what a lot of anglers revel in, chase huge calicos over structure or in the kelp, which is returning steadily now that El Niño is past. The colder water brings squid, and that means hordes of topwater yellows.

As of now, WON has 12 spaces available still on this trip, as well as the option for a group of three to take a private plane from Brown Field Airport in San Diego which will fly directly to the island, which means more convenience and ultimately more angling time for those who choose this option. The WON rate for this trip is $1,695.
