HOLLISTER — There was just a slight breeze blowing when the siren went off in the marsh at the Hollister Gun Club in the North Grasslands out of Hollister, and immediately after, the silence was broken by the staccato of gunfire.

THE HOLLISTER GUN CLUB Veterans Hunt held Jan. 17 in the North Grasslands was well-attended, and appreciated by veterans who seldom, if ever, get out for a waterfowl hunt.

Joey Teresi, on his first-ever duck hunt from a blind, was in the premier spot. His host, Steve Crossland, had put him in the right spot as hundreds of ducks passed just over their heads. According to Joey it was, ”AWESOME!” They had no trouble getting limits.

John Hesse had also picked well, as he guided Jeff Smith of CWA. They, too, had lots of ducks in close range and managed easy limits. Bernie Farnung was guiding a two-time Silver Star recipient, Mike Anderson. They had teal buzzing them and managed to drop their fair share. As Mike said, “I was happy to get one.” But he got way more than that.

Richard Voss, A Special Forces soldier, was guided by Mike Keely. It started slow, but then Mike started sweet-talking the ducks and they began to drop into the decoys. Richard showed his prowess with the shotgun and hammered a bunch of ducks.

A BIG GREENHEAD topped the strap of teal for Will Saparito and Jared Strange during their Vets Hunt at the Hollister Gun Club in North Grasslands, sponsored by Cal. Waterfowl and the club.

Jared Strange was a friend of Will Saparito and just happened to get drawn for the Hollister Vet Hunt, so they got to hunt together. It was also a little tough for them, but they managed to drop a bunch of teal and a nice big fat greenhead.

The evening before the hunt, the Vets and club members had a fantastic tri-tip dinner. Vance Wolfsen of Wolfsen’s Meats in Gustine donated all the meat for the 4th year in a row. He also donated the Saturday lunch. A special thanks to Steve and Brenda Baptista for cooking up all kinds of delicious sides.

This hunt would not be possible if it were not for the efforts of Bart Bates. Bart got together with Jeff Smith of CWA and started the Veteran’s Hunt Program back in 2011. Since then CWA has hosted over 1,200 Vets. A fantastic program for all Veterans.

All of the members of the Hollister Gun Club would like to say a “Thank you for your service,” to all the Veterans out there.

MIKE ANDERSON AND Bernie Farnumg hunted together at the Hollister Gun Club during the Annual Vet Hunt at the club, and scored well on zippy green-winged teal.

A MIX OF TEAL was the take for Mike Keely and Tom Richard Voss during their day of hunting the Hollister Gun Club during the Annual Vet Shoot sponsored by the club.
