Sept. 4: The Yellowtail Derby kicks off, and participating anglers can fish from private or open-party vessels. The event runs for 20 days. Sept. 9: Sav-On Tackle, located at 9917 Orr & Day Road in Santa Fe Springs, will be hosting a free seminar with WON’s own Saltwater Editor Brandon Hayward. The seminar will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and Hayward will be covering this fall’s 8- to 12-day long range season. Topics to be covered include tackle and techniques for “variety” fishing on early-season September and October 8- to 11-day trips that find mixed-bag action on tuna to over 100 pounds, wahoo, dorado, yellowtail, etc. A special emphasis will be on Alijos Rocks for yellowfin tuna and fishing wahoo. Part two will focus on fishing for “cow” yellowfin tuna on the Lower Banks on November thru February trips. Topics covered will include gear, tackle, techniques and how to fish the rail. Sept. 9-12: The Long Beach Yacht and Boat Show produced by the Southern California Marine Association and presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California. Show hours are Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, children 12 and under are free. Sept. 10-11: The Recycled Fish 24-Hour Fish-A-Thon. Open to freshwater anglers in all 50 states. To participate, anglers begin by becoming a Fish-A-Thon Ambassador/Team Leader at www.recycledfish.org, and sign up their team of two to four anglers. After they receive their Fish-A-Thon welcome kit in the mail, each team member’s next step is to secure pledges from family, friends or co-workers for each hour they fish, which typically range from $10 to $75 an hour. Next they go fishing. Lines are cast Friday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. until Saturday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. During the event anglers are also encouraged to pick up any trash and use tackle that is easier on the environment, such as lead-free weights or biodegradable baits and lures, and practice good catch-and-release tactics. Every team raising a minimum of $100 will get a complimentary 24-Hour Fish-A-Thon shirt for all team members, plus additional prizes like tackle, apparel and gift cards. Sept. 11: Glen Helen Regional Park will be hosting its Fish ‘N’ Kids Catfish Derby. The event is open to youngsters of all ages and skill levels, and runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The focus is on family and fun, although prizes will be awarded for biggest, smallest and even ugliest fish! A special tribute conducted by San Bernardino’s own Public Safety Academy will commemorate the fallen Americans of and mark the nine-year anniversary of 9/11. Sept. 11: Help the steelhead recovery effort in Malibu Creek by joining in the inauguration event of the Louisiana Red Crayfish Removal Project. Louisiana reds are a nonnative invasive predator species altering the ecosystem of the streams in the Santa Monica Mountains. Lower Malibu Creek still supports steelhead trout. Your help is needed to get the crayfish out. Sierra Pacific Flyfishers (SPFF) will be partnering with Mountains Restoration Trust, a local land trust, and Pepperdine University. Up to 50 college students will be participating as part of the annual Pepperdine Step Forward Day, an annual community service event. The project runs from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
