Northern CAL Waterfowl Counts SACRAMENTO — Although duck numbers are down 3 percent from last year’s record numbers, overall, the estimate of 40.9 millions birds from a May survey is still 21 percent higher than the average duck population from 1955 through 2008. Those figures virtually assure another season of high bag limits and maximum days, so take advantage of any shotgun shell sales you might find! In addition, many regions important to breeding ducks are said to be experiencing more significant precipitation as the summer progresses, which could increase later breeding efforts and ensure brood survival. Duck population estimates are based on preliminary data just released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as part of its annual, preliminary report on breeding ducks and habitats across the traditional survey area of the United States and Canada. More detailed information on the outlook for the 2010-2011 waterfowl season will be forthcoming over the next month as waterfowl biologists analyze all collected data, which will ultimately be used by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in partnership with state representatives from the four flyways to establish regulatory frameworks on waterfowl hunting season lengths, dates and bag limits.
