HUNTING FEATURE REPORT BY JIM NIEMIEC

SAN CLEMENTE – Outdoorsmen are easy to buy gifts for, as there are so many great rifles, shotguns, pistols and shooting accessories to choose from. Just leafing through the pages of Western Outdoor News each week and looking at ads and write-ups of new products should be enough to make a lengthy Christmas wish list.

There is no end to what a hunter or gun enthusiast might want to add to their collection of items to support their time in the field, in a duck blind or at the shooting range. The following are some of the newer items that just might be very welcome when un-wrapped come Christmas morning.

Turner’s Outdoorsman just sent out their latest Holiday Flyer with specials and there are at least three products on sale that caught this hunting editor’s eye. Tanglefree mallard decoys are on sale at 60 per cent off retail and a couple of boxes of these decoys would enhance any decoy spread when those fat orange footed mallards start arriving in our flyway during the tale end of the season. Also featured in the flyer were a pair of ear protectors for less than $20 and topping off the shotgun sale was an Escort Silver over & under for less than $500.

Big 5 Sporting Goods advertised a good deal on a Remington 879 Express shotgun and also featured some good prices on other makes. There was a $30 rebate from Remington, but you will have to stop by and check out the details on whether this sale will be extended and the date that the rebate might expire.

Mossberg’s Silver Reserve over & under shotguns have been on sale at some gun dealers and I would think that there could be some good buys appearing in WON prior to the holidays.

Weatherby rifles are highly prized by big game hunters and the new price on the Vanguard w/scope at $399 is a real buy. The rifle is available in a number of popular calibers.

WON talked with Ted Hartley, regional rep for Remington about the demand for guns.

“We are seeing a lot of folks checking out rifles and shotguns. I have been spending at lot of time at Big 5 and some of the other retailers to make sure they have inventory. There are some good prices out there right now and lots of gun owners are considering buying a new firearm now in fear that under the new administration buying any rifle, shotgun, pistol or even ammunition might be more restrictive,” noted Hartley.

Other accessories that are also welcome by hunters and shooters would include: an Iverson duck or goose call, Mojo spinning wing duck or dove decoys, a pair of fine Oakly shooting glasses that are made with high impact lenses to avoid eye damage in the field or on the gun range, a GPS unit or Frank’s “Mr. Wister” game strap. Also a membership in either or both Ducks Unlimited or California Waterfowl Association is a thoughtful gift for any concerned waterfowl hunter . Under Armor under-garments to protect you from a cold morning in the blind or day up in the high country chasing chukar and to make sure that you are safe on the mountain the new SPOT unit is something that every hunter or outdoorsman could use.

In addition a wish list might see the following accessories: a new floating or hard gun case from Plano who offers a wide selection of durable Gun Guard rifle, shotgun or pistol protection cases that safeguard and protect firearms. A must have tool for all gun owners is the neat little Smith and Wesson Gun Pal, which is a 12 piece bit and driver set that this hunting editor has used a number of times since it was introduced at SHOT Show 2008 in Las Vegas.

Hunters and shooters never can have enough ammo in their gun room or safe. The introduction of new Bis-Maxx shotgun shells means that bismuth is available again in a variety of loads that are ideal for all shotguns, all gauges and all chokes. Bass Pro Shop has more copper bullets on the shelf for those heading out on hog hunts this spring, and don’t be hesitant about asking for a couple of boxes of Federal Premium High Velocity, 1500 fps, #5’s for better knock down power during that late season hunt up in chukar country.

One new product that proved very useful was the ThermaCELL mosquito repel unit that keeps pesky insects away when in a dove stand or spending the first few weekends hunting ducks over ponded water prior to the first frost of the season. The unit field tested by this hunting editor preformed well and with the extra refills it worked in a boat where black flies were in an attack mode.

Staying within a hunting budget every upland game bird club that advertises in Western Outdoor News has weekday specials on released pheasant, chukar and bobwhite quail, which would be the perfect gift for a wing shooter who is not looking forward to putting away his shotgun come the end of the upland game bird seasons. Some of the clubs are offering mixed bird hunts that includes native valley quail that just adds to the excitement of a day in the field.

Gun dog owners also should be easy to buy a gift for. There is a wide selection of Realtree camo dog collars and leashes available through the many catalogs that outdoorsmen receive in the mail and a good whistle is an important tool used by any sportsman who shares a field or duck pond with a sporting dog. Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shop fall hunting catalogs are an excellent source for finding that perfect gift for your best friend in the field.

With the ever growing population of wild boar along the coastal mountains and up into Northern California there are some good packages being offered. Bitterwater Outfitters is close to LA and the ranches hunted are loaded with fat hogs and big tuskers for those looking for a hunt that is still within most budgets. Those in the market for a top end hog hunt and possible combo for upland game birds might want to check out the RS Bar Guest Ranch located just outside of King City for a two-day hunt. Cedar Canyon Ranch, located in the Tehachapi Mountains, is offering a 3-day European boar hunt for just $600. A gift of any of the above hunts would be a welcome surprise for any big game hunter and a wonderful opportunity to give a present to a new hunter.

If you have run out of gift suggestions there is one very nice outdoor event that should find itself on every wing shooters list and that would be to purchase a gift certificate for a couple rounds of sporting clays from Raahauge’s Shooting Enterprises or busting clay targets at Triple B Clays Shotgun Sports Park, Moore-N-Moore Sporting Clays, Prado Olympic Shooting Park, Oak Tree Gun Club or Winchester Canyon Gun Club, which are all fine facilities during and after the hunting season.

Happy Holidays to all and always be safe in the field.
