Jr. hunts set for wildlife refuges

BY JIM NIEMIEC/WON Staff WriterPublished: Jan 27, 2012

NILAND — Wister, San Jacinto and Kern wildlife refuges, along with a number of duck clubs, will host junior hunters to a day of waterfowl hunting on Feb. 4. This hunt traditionally gives young duck and goose hunters an excellent opportunity to shoot birds all by themselves without being surrounded by a lot of gunning pressure. These three refuges will have been closed since the season ended on Jan. 29, giving waterfowl a chance to regroup on the wetlands. Normally the first part of the northern migration of ducks out of Mexico also occurs, which brings more birds into this part of the Pacific flyway.

Wister will host a dinner in the parking lot adjacent to the check station off Davis Road and Hwy. 111 starting at 5 p.m.. The event is co-sponsored by the Wister Wildlife Refuge staff, Mike Stevens, local duck clubs, Schumacher's Waterfowl Supply, CWA, Bass Pro Shops, Jimmy's Outdoors and Turner's Outdoorsmen. Volunteers will be on hand to serve dinner to the kids, their parents and volunteers. There will be a duck and goose calling contest for all the young hunters that want to compete. For additional information call (760) 359-0577.

San Jacinto will gather junior hunters together for blind selection and then serve a pancake breakfast before shoot time. Around 11 a.m. the refuge staff, along with many volunteers and supporters will begin serving lunch to all hunters. After lunch raffle prizes will be passed out to the kids thanks to a lot of support from the local community, adult hunters and those who support conservation projects at this refuge. For additional information on the hunt or to volunteer or add support to this great event contact the refuge at (951) 928-0580.

Kern National Wildlife Refuge will also be open for the junior hunt. There will be a normal draw on shoot day, Feb. 4, hot cocoa and doughnuts will be served early in the morning and kids will be sent out to blinds along with an adult non-shooter. The refuge will open up units 5 and 6, which are normally not hunted during the regular waterfowl season, and this should make for a good day of gunning on the vast wetlands of this good shooting refuge. Unit 1 will be closed due the difficulty of getting kids out to blind sites. Lunch will be served about 11 a.m. and hunters will be allowed to return to blinds to finish out the hunt day. This hunt is sponsored by the Kern refuge staff, Ammo Dump, CWA, Ducks Unlimited, Wild Wings, Ole Boy Outdoors and Second Amendment Sports. For more information or to be added to the draw list call (661) 725-2767.
