Walnut Grove: Early honker opener epic for guide and clients!

BY GEORGE KAMMERER/On The Fly Guide ServicePublished: Oct 03, 2019

WALNUT GROVE — Our early Canada goose season opening day hunt was located 20 minutes from Walnut Grove in farm country, and it dawned with a strong Delta breeze blowing 15 to 20 mph and overcast skies, not ideal for Canada goose hunting.

IT WAS A deadly dawn for big canada geese on the early honker season opener Sept. 28, when Chris, Christian, Matt, Jeff, Buzz, Jimmy, Marty and Dennis (not shown taking photo) hunted with George Kammerer of On The Fly Outfitters (far right) for perfect limits of 100 honkers for 10 hunters on Sept. 28 hunting 20 minutes out of Walnut Grove.

Our first flock came in at 6:44 with one more right behind, but both landed too far out in the field for a shot. Then we waited another 25 agonizing minutes, wondering if the birds had fed out our field and moved on. It was a long wait, when suddenly my helper guide, Gabe said the words every goose hunter dreams of, "Here they come" and we all ducked down into the blind as the first flock of the season approached us straight on.

They were 200 yards out…. now 100… now 80… 60… on they came, locked up solid and dropping fast…now one maple leafing… then another… 40 yards… now 30….. now 25…… "NOW!" All guns arose at once and the first volley folded six geese… then "Boom" another dropped… "Boom-Boom" and the last two in the flock fold up and crashed to earth with the resounding thuds that every goose hunter loves to hear!

We had gotten the entire flock of nine. What a way to start the season! For the next three hours it was like that. We didn’t get every bird by far, but had several more flocks of three, four, five and seven in which we got every bird in the flock. My clients were red hot. when the last shot was fired at 9:40 our group had their limits of exactly 100 honkers for 10 of us. The Delta breeze and overcast skies had been good to us after all on opening day.

The next day on Sunday our two clients shot their limits by 8: 15 to make for a perfect weekend. Limits for all clients both days. Our client Karina even made a triple! Boy, I wish all openers were like that. This one was special indeed.

TULE KIDS — Dillian Smith from Susanville and Ryan Peery of Yreka proudly hold their first-ever straps full of ducks from the youth hunt in the Klamath Basin. They hit the marsh with Tony Watson from Weed, and Jason Osburn of Tule Lake, and made short work of their hunt and were limited out before 9 a.m. on the first day and each took home limits both days for an epic start to their hunting careers!
