Improved hunting for many...

SACRAMENTO - Following the normal hot weather last week, a major cool down in temperatures by as much as 20 degrees improved deer hunting for many in the coastal range, and also in the Sierra.

"I was hunting the Wilderness Unlimited Clarke Ranch out of Laytonville Wednesday evening and Thursday morning," said WON Staff Bill Karrr, "and while I only saw a few does, there was a nice buck shot that first evening."

Jackie Anderson, while hunting with husband Mick Anderson, caretakers of the Clarke Ranch in the coastal A zone, shot a beautiful 2x3 mature buck just an hour before dark.

WON staffer Bill Karr was there for a short hunt, and although neither he nor the other hunters that day were successful, Jackie and Mick took a short drive to the east side of the ranch when she spotted the hind end of a deer that was feeding.

They both could see horns, but the ranch is 3-point or better, so they were searching desperately for the third point on one side. "I can't see one, I think it's a 2-point," said Mick at one point. "Nope, I see three on one side," said Jackie, as she made the shot.

Over in the Sierra foothills, Ken Mathis of Camino shot a nice 140-pound, 20-inch spread forked horn with his crossbow at 42 feet in D-5 near his home. Mathis has a disabled archer's permit that allows him to use the crossbow during the bow season.

Ed Dillard at Dillard's Fishing Guide Service reported that his buddy "Mike" of Beckwourth shot a fork/spike in A12 Zone this past weekend, and said that the Forest Service Ranger had validated four other bucks on Saturday. The cool weather over the weekend really had the deer moving.

Merritt Gilbert of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis said that there had been three or four nice archery bucks taken from the Edison Lake area over Kaiser Pass from Shaver Lake.
