SACRAMENTO — Following an outpouring of opposition, the California Assembly's Appropriations Committee has pulled SB249 from their hearing calendar. Originally scheduled for Thursday, the removal of SB249 from the calendar means it is effectively dead for the year. According to the Outdoor Wire, "We are told by our sources that Assembly staffers said the decision was the result of grassroots opposition. As one staffer said, 'you really unleashed the dogs this time.'" SB249, if enacted, would have prohibited the sale and possession of all semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines, including the so-called "bullet button" magazines currently allowed. California already prohibits any magazine with more than a ten-round capacity. This would have made illegal a huge number of legal and legitimate hunting rifles in California that are used by everyday hunters for big game, and now legally in possession. It's just one more move by the Democrats to take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. Of course, considering the sentiment of legislators in California, and a promise from the bill's author, we can expect to see this bill, or a similar one, in the future. |
