Giant 33-lb. Melones catfish almost takes new record

ANGELS CAMP —For most lakes, catching a 30-pound-plus catfish would mean an instant lake record, but at New Melones, a Sonora angler’s lunker weighing over 30 pounds didn’t quite eclipse the existing record.

“David Warne caught a huge 33-pound, 4-ounce catfish while fishing near Peoria Flat,” said Melanie Lewis at Glory Hole Sports. “The lake record catfish is 36 pounds and David got pretty close!”

Now is the time to catch catfish at the lake. Kracker Morris of Arnold was back on the lake, and he caught two big whiskerfish on crawdads. The bigger one was 13 pounds, 3 ounces. Melvin Allen, Sr. of Modesto caught three catfish to 5 pounds, 4 ounces on live minnows fishing the Carson Creek area at night with live minnows.

Most of the catfish reports are coming from the areas easily accessed by shore anglers. Top spots are Glory Hole Point, Angels Cove, Tuttletown and under the Highway 49 Bridge. While crawdads and minnows were hot baits for last week’s lunkers, other popular baits include chicken liver, mackerel, anchovies and nightcrawlers.

Don Pedro’s big trout on bite

LA GRANGE — Anglers looking to replace the kokanee action that has faded out in the Mother Lode region can now switch to trout trolling, and one of the top prospects for big fish is Lake Don Pedro.

“I made the trip to Don Pedro with my father, Don, on Thursday,” said guide Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing. “The day started out slow, and we went for an hour and a half before we had a hit.” Sticking with it is the key, because after hooking and releasing a couple bass in the 3-pound class, the Smiths starting hooking some quality rainbows.

“The next fish took an Ex-cel lure trolled 45 feet deep,” said Smith. “We thought it was another bass, but as it came to the surface and we eased the big fish into the net, we could not believe the size of this monster trout.” The fish weighed just shy of 4 pounds. A couple rigs were down seeking landlocked kings, and the pair also caught two kings that broke the 3-pound mark.

“We ended the day with four monster rainbow trout and two kings,” said Smith. “We lost three other trout that were very nice fish.” Top strike getters were shad, Vance’s Slim Fins, Ex-cel spoons and Shasta Tackle CrippLures. The kings hit shad fished about 100 feet down. All the fish were over 2 pounds.
