BROOKINGS, Ore. — The Chetco River has been pumping out kings — and the first steelies of the season — but the bite started to taper over the weekend because of low, clear flows.

While most of the action early in the week came compliments of the kings, a few anglers also hooked into the vanguard of the steelhead run later on. Art Moldonado of Roseburg was one of the lucky anglers who double-dipped while fishing with guide Jimmy Dean and ended up with a 28-pound Chinook and an 8-pound steelhead — both taken on plugs.

“After the rains, the Chetco dropped back into shape and actually cleared very fast,” said David Pitts of the Chetco Outdoor Store on Sunday. “It is almost too clear at this time and the kings that have been in the system for a few weeks are getting pretty spooky. With few fresh fish coming in, most of the kings in the Chetco are pretty colored up, too.”

Pitts noted that there are kings sprinkled through the system from Social Security Bar all the way to the low water bridge and they’ve been hitting Kwikfish and roe mainly.
“Many people are starting to believe it is going to be an early metalhead year,” said Pitts. “And a few guys have been getting them here and there over the past week or two.”
