DELTA Anglers on Sacto side find action for sturgeon and stripers

NORTHERN CAL WEEKLY RIVERS REPORTS

ISLETON—Although it has not been consistent, anglers are finding good days and not so good days on the Sacramento River side of the Delta system from Rio Vista up. Clearing waters and less debris were also reported and hopes are high for the month of March.

“Fishing for striped bass improved and fishing for sturgeon slowed down a bit, but it was still very good. There were many striped bass caught in the Isleton area from the Dump Gate to the Windmill about two miles north of the Isleton Bridge,” said Can Nguyen from Bob’s Bait & Tackle.

On the opposite site of the Windmill, where there is a long sand bar with clam beds, has been a good area to fish for striped bass and sturgeon this past week. “Most bank anglers got their sturgeon or limited out on striped bass almost every other day last week. It appears that more keeper sturgeon were landed than oversize sturgeon caught in this area. In other areas either more undersize or oversize sturgeon were landed compared to the legal ones,” Nguyen said.

As an example, Nguyen said that Wednesday, Paul Engel got a 10-pound striped bass at the Isleton fishing pier on grass shrimp. “Also that day, I hooked one good sturgeon, but while I was setting the hook the sturgeon jumped and my fishing line got cut. Twenty minutes later, I landed 60-inch sturgeon on ghost shrimp.

"'Tom' from San Jose also caught two, but one was too big and kept running until he was out of fishing line," Nguyen said. "He ended up with a 59-inch sturgeon 30 minutes later. That fish was released safely, even though it was legal size, he didn’t want to use up the last tag he still has for this year,” he said.

Fishing for sturgeon should continue to be good due to the good rain this past week. “Rainy days are good for fishing for sturgeon if there is no wind," said Nguyen. "Sturgeon love to feed during the rain. Don’t be afraid to fish those days, you’ll have a better chance at getting them than any other time.”

While rain may be good for sturgeon, striper fishing usually slows down due to muddy waters. Capt. Mike Gravert of Intimidator Sportfishing said the few opportunities he had to get out, he found heavy boat traffic and sea lions on the attack. All he could muster were three stripers to 24 inches on a half day trip. “We talked to a half a dozen other boats and they all reported a slow bite,” Capt. Gravert said.

Water temperatures dropped back down to 53 degrees, which can also slow the bite. “With weather on its way, it's going to be a wait-and-see what happens thing again,” he said. Fishing the northeastern Delta, Capt. Gravert has been using 1/2-ounce Blade Runner swimbaits with a Basstrix tail, 10 Trixters, and of course minnows.

SACRAMENTO RIVER hit by mud, just as stripers start to make a showing

SACRAMENTO—Sturgeon fishing had been great on the Sacramento River, and striper fishing was showing some signs of life, too, but then, Mother Nature intervened with a series of rainstorms which has knocked out of action.

“Can’t lie to you, fishing is very slow because of water conditions,” said Bob Bradbury of Johnson’s Bait and Tackle.  “The sturgeon fishing had been really good, and it will get good  again when the river settles down, which should be in a few days...uh, oh.  It’s supposed to rain again Wednesday.”

Skies were clear Sunday afternoon, but with the prediction of more rain, it may be awhile before anglers will have a shot at what is likely to be an influx of more sturgeon, as well as the beginnings of the spring striped bass run.

Yee, Vang of Broadway Bait Rod and Gun said a hint of what is to come striper run-wise was the onset of some striper action at Bryte Beach last week before the rains blew out the river.

“There was a nice little push of stripers at Bryte’s Beach, including an 18  pounder caught by San Saechao on a bloodworm,” he said.  “We had an 8 pounder from there weighed in, too.”
