NORTHERN CAL EVENT UPDATE

McAVOY HARBOR —Facing challenging weather and a large crowd of boats, anglers competing in the Super Bowl Sturgeon Derby still managed to find nearly 40 fish to bring to weigh in. With a target length as a goal, a total of seven anglers per day shared in a pool of over $45,000.

“On Saturday, we had a total of 17 fish caught,” said Tony Lopez who helped with measuring and judging the event. “On Sunday, we had 18 fish caught.” He said five fish were disqualified, four due to tail damage, and one because the angler unwittingly fished Friday night before the derby officially started.

Derby officials only recorded the first initial and last names of the winning anglers. In first place on Saturday was M. Guidry. Second went to C. Chaney and third to K. Renshaw. M. Campbell took fourth, R. Garcia fifth, C. Weber sixth and V. Nguyen seventh. Respectively, the anglers won $7,806, $3,123, $1561, $1,250, $780, $624, and $468.

Sunday’s winners were Larry Ramirez of San Jose in first, R. Smith in second, R. Mendoza in third, M. Garrello in fourth, T. Ross in fifth, R. Johnson in sixth and M. Cooper in seventh. “T. Ross was a woman who was on her first fishing trip,” said Lopez. “She was just happy she caught a fish!” What a surprise for her when that fish netted her $780.
