Primo steelhead conditions on Russian!

BY BILL KARR/WON Staff WriterPublished: Jan 03, 2019

GUERNEVILLE —The Russian River has dropped into prime shape and anglers are finding nice hatchery and wild steelhead, according to Scott Heemstra of Kings Sport & Tackle in Guerneville.

THE RUSSIAN RIVER is in prime shape right now for steelhead, and both hatchery and wild fish are being caught. “Gabe” caught and released this beautiful buck of 14 or 15 pounds in the lower river.

“The Russian is moving into prime conditions as of today, Saturday, December 29,” said Heemstra. “Flows are currently at 800 cfs with 2 to 3 feet of visibility. The past few days the water was high and muddy, but a few people plunking roe with a Spin & Glo managed some new hatchery steelhead.”

He said the driftboats in the Healdsburg run are now also getting into fish while dragging roe and backtrolling plugs. “The future weather forecast is showing clear skies for the next week, so expect the river to continue to drop and fish to start holding in the deeper runs and pools.

“This will be perfect conditions for bobbers and jigs/bait/or beads and ideal fly fishing conditions will be in place all this week,” Heemstra said. “Try type II shooting heads with a 3 ips sink tip with mini intruders, comets, bosses and leech patterns, all available here at Kings.”

The highlight of the past couple weeks was a beautiful wild buck steelhead caught in the lower river by local fisherman Gabe that looked all of 14 or 15 pounds.
