Trout biting bait at Lake Chabot

BY JIM JONES/WON Staff WriterPublished: Feb 08, 2012

CASTRO VALLEY — Anglers, especially bait fishermen, have been taking home some nice stringers of trout at Lake Chabot, according to Michael Smith of Lake Chabot Outfitters.

“Fishing has been good, and because we haven’t had much rain this season, the fish are concentrated and don’t seem to be moving around much,” he said. “So, if you catch one in a spot, you are likely to catch more.”

Raccoon Point has been one of the “go-to” spots for consistent success, according to Smith, and Bob Gerhardt of Brisbane caught a 6 pounder on Power Bait. Smith said that Indian Cove, Coots Landing, and Alder Point have also been very good. Although Smith said that trolling has been slower than bait fishing, a visitor to the lake on Sunday caught four nice rainbows on a Fire Tiger Rapala fished near the surface off Raccoon Point.

While not many catfish are being taken, a 5 pounder was caught on a trolled Rapala
