KIRKWOOD — Ice fishing at Caples Lake was productive this past week, according to Caples Lake Resort and Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters. The ice was a very stout 12 inches thick and covered with 2 to 3 feet of insulating snow — perfect for a day of winter fishing!

“The ice fishing has been good for a mix of rainbows and browns for fishermen working the spillway area at Caples Lake,” Victor Babbett at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters said. "We’ve been taking guide trips to the spillway and auguring through 2 to 3 feet of snow and a foot of ice to hit water. The best bite has been coming on bay shrimp, worms, Power Bait and jigged Kastmaster spoons.”

John Voss echoed the report at the spillway but emphasized that bay shrimp were the hot bait for a successful outing. Call Caples Lake Resort for lodge info — lodge guests can borrow ice fishing gear.
