BERKELEY — Variety added spice to fishing life for boats out of Berkeley. Bay trips resulted in good counts of halibut and some stripers, while boats that made trips through the Gate came back with salmon or rockfish and lingcod.

“Halibut bit for California Dawn anglers at South Hampton and Berkeley Flats on Wednesday, including a 25 pounder caught by Kyle Farris of Sacramento,” said Capt. James Smith. On Tuesday 19 people caught 167 rockfish, 9 halibut and 1 striped bass. Then on Saturday the boat posted 33 limits of rockfish plus 4 lingcod and 5 halibut.

W Buoy hosted a decent salmon bite where the New El Dorado III caught 19 salmon for 25 anglers. The New Easy Rider had 20 for 22 and the Flying Fish caught 24 for 24. “Most fish were in the 10- to 15-pound range with only a few fish under 10 pounds and the largest salmon going an impressive 22 pounds. Straight bait worked the best,” said Scott Sutherland of Berkeley Marina Sportfishing. On a rockfish trip to the Farallon Islands the El Dorado enjoyed limits for 20 people plus 11 lingcod to 15 pounds.

Capt. Jim Smith on the Happy Hooker reported good halibut action at Alcatraz Island where they boated flatties to 35 pounds. Larry Nelson of Oakland took honors with a 44-pound white seabass.
