Fair trout bite, great weather at Collins Lake

BY TIM GOODE/WON Staff WriterPublished: Dec 14, 2017

BROWNS VALLEY — The Collins Lake trout bite has been fair, but the conditions last week were excellent and the same forecast for this week makes a day on the lake inviting.

Guide Rustic Rob Reimers fished the lake twice last week with middling result. “You can troll around for a half-day and get six fish or so, but they are nice fish,” Reimers said. He employed a variety of tactics, including dodgers/nightcrawler, broken-back Rapalas, chartreuse hoochies with a blade and worm or Brad’s Cut Plugs.

“I have been just longlining and pulling a little bit of everything,” Reimers said. “Everthing works, but the Kokanee Series Brad’s Cut Plug in orange was leading the pack.” His largest fish was a 6 pounder he hooked using a red dodger and nightcrawler.

The biggest fish recorded last week was a 6¼-pound trout caught by Dave Finnie of Folsom, who was using green Power Bait at the beach.

The surface temperature in the morning was 53.6 degrees, warming 3 to 4 degrees through the day. “It’s not off the hook fishing buy if you want to go out and enjoy this nice weather it’s worth spending a day,” Reimers said.
